I knew a little of the fighting in Manchuria but didn't realise the full scope of it. Reading a couple of the links there it sounds like comunist China could have been largely crushed as late as that.

Well we might know little of it because the PRC prefers it that way and focus more on the horrors the Japanese did during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
