Just saw Darkest Hour with Gary Oldman as Churchill. I liked it, and how the man himself was portrayed as a cranky old man (but a competent one). Good acting all around.
Has anyone else seen it? I think it makes a good companion to Dunkirk.

Only seen the clips shown on TV and haven't been to the cinima for years [or probably decades]. Also don't do pay-for channels of TV so will probably wait until it comes out on one of the free-view channels.
From what I've seen it does show him as cranky, which he was, but a great motivator and the man Britain needed for it to continue the war. Also quite like the bit between him and Clemmie where he's expressing doubts and she's giving him a morale boost.

So it seems that Gary Oldman has won the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of the late Prime Minister in Darkest Hour.

Well first Lincoln and now Churchill, seems that you are sure to win a Oscar by portraying a leader in a dark ore trouble period of a conflict.

He was really good in that film but I had issues with the film. There were serious and funny moments plus, from what I know, it got the history correct. Then Churchill went and took a ride of the Tube and spoke to 'ordinary Londoners'. It was cringe-worthy and ruined the whole film. The scene stood out as TERRIBLE, just really bad.

I don't know. That scene - it was five, maybe ten minutes long: a lifetime - was really, really bad. The portrayal of the ordinary people he met appeared to be written by someone who has never met anyone else in their entire life but themselves.

I saw it in the cinema, and I thought it was good overall. The narrative was shaky at times - but, Gary Oldman stole the show with his stunning portrayal of Sir Winston Churchill. His Best Actor award was richly deserved.
