What if Ronald Reagan won the Republican nomination in 1976? OTL he named moderate to liberal Republican Senator Richard Schweiker as his running mate before the convention and alienated enough of his supporters to narrowly lose the nomination. The POD is that rumors of Reagan's selection of Schweiker emerge before he makes the announcement. When he and his staff hear the negative comments from conservatives, they decide to keep the selection of Schweiker until after he has won the nomination. Reagan is selected at the convention and the next morning he announces Schweiker as his choice. Schweiker is nominated with many angry no votes. The selection of Schweiker does not make peace with all Ford supportes. While Reagan can not be tied to Nixon as easily as Ford could, Carter can use the bad economy and Reagan's unpopular views like his opposition to Medicare.
popular vote: Carter 53 % Reagan 45 % Electoral Collage: Carter Maine, Massachusttes, Rhode Island, Connecticutt, New York, New Jersey. Pennslyvania, Delaware, Maryland, DC, West Virginia, Ohio, Michigain, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Washington, Oregon, Hawaii. California, Nevada, New Mexico. Arkansas, Tennesee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Florida for 396 electoral votes. Reagan Vermont, New Hampshire, Virginia, Mississippi,Kentucky, Indiana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahomia, Texas, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizonia and Alaska for 142 electoral votes.
I still don't know how to do a map. I went to the sites that Pericles recommened and I couldn't ge them to work. Nor did I have any luck with any of the other sites I found. I would be grateful if someone could do one.

I can do what I think the outcome would be in a map-though I think Reagan would win as he would be a charismatic outsider and in line with the shifting national mood. However winning in 1976 would likely be a poisoned chalice due to the economic problems of the 1970s. Reagan could handle them better but he would be hamstrung by a liberal Congress and vulnerable for 1980.

Maybe liberal Republican Charles Mathias runs as an Independent like he nearly did IOTL. Mathias could take support from Carter despite being a Republican and he could keep Carter from gaining enough liberal Republicans to stop Reagan.

Reagan would have lost in 1976. He is of the president's party in bad economic times. He has to defend his unpopular views OTL he was elected President because of the recession and the hostage crisis.

Ford nearly won despite hard economic times and Reagan is more charismatic and can distance himself more from Ford's record plus the nation was shifting right. I think it could be close.

Perhaps he would but Reagan was supposed to lose 1980 and was Goldwater 2.0 but then he won in a landslide.

So Reagan also win a second time if he won in 1976 I doubt it as Reagan with a very liberal Congress and many economic problems would be far less successful than he was I OTL and could lose like Carter. He could lose too in 1976 but I don't think Carter could win a landslide against him.

While many saw Ford's loss as inevitable he came from something like 30 points behind after the conventions to only lose by a handful. Without that flub in the foreign policy debate (Eastern Europe is not under Soviet domination) he might've pulled it out.
