So it has come to light that in early 1940, a high ranking member of the National Socialist Movement in the Netherlands (Dutch: Nationaal-Socialistische Beweging in Nederland) called Meinoud Rost van Tonningen and few of his supporters wanted to launch a coup in the Netherlands, most likely to prevent a German invasion of the Netherlands, van Tonningen even tried to confine NSB leader Anton Mussert, but Mussert did not support van Tonningen idea as he wanted the NSB to come into power in the Netherlands in a much safer way (van Tonningen did not know that Mussert was already in secret contact with the Germans, Mussert hoped and believed that when the Germans did invade the Netherlands they would install him as leader of a new Netherlands government). So i do not have much information about it as the article in question has yet to be release, but as soon as it is i will buy it as it is fascinated to know that the NSB wanted to launch a coup in the Netherlands in early 1940.

Considering that the NSB was pretty much a fringe party With about 32.000 members in 1940, the most likely out come would probably have been that the coup failed and Van Tonningen would have been Arrested (and posibly executed) for high treason. Hitler may have used this incident to launch an invasion though.

I do not think that the, lets call it the van Tonningen faction in the NSB who wanted to launch a coup had any contact with their Belgium counterparts the Rexist Party. I think eurowatch is right, the plan by the van Tonningen faction to launch a coup in order to prevent a German invasion of the Netherlands might in fact result in Germany invading the Netherlands, also i wonder where they get the weapons from, the NSB as far as i can recall did not have the backing of the Royal Netherlands Army who could easy counter then if there was any coup.
