What if FDR listens to a doctor, who tells he won't live through another term as president and he does not run in 1944. Who wins the Democratic nomination? I think Roosevelt's endorsement would be very important. Who would he pick? I think the Democrat would win. He would be helped by Roosevelt's popularity and the idea of continueing the successful wartime polices. That is unless Roosevelt picks William O Douglas. I don't think a man who as a 67 year old Supreme Court Justice married a 23 year old college senior would have had good political skills. I don't see why Dewey wouldn't still be the Republican candidate.

McNutt was a New Dealer. His policies would have been much the same as Truman. The one difference I can think of is that he would have integrated the military earlier.

I don't think he would have done anything different about the war. I know he favored using the atomic bomb.

He probably would have approved of using the bomb on either one, in order to shorten the war.

His Wikipedia article states that he favored the extermination of the Japanese people. Whew! If that became general knowledge, the Japanese would have been really suicidal to surrender. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_V._McNutt

He used the word extermination in a speech. He said he meant the leaders of the Japanese government.

He would have included Tojo and the other military leaders. Not the emperor.
