What if Reagan had agreed to take Ford as his running mate? With the recession and the hostage crisis they would win. Ford asked for significant power. He wanted control over the budget. Which means that policy would be more moderate. He also wanted control over foriegn policy. That probably means that Kissinger is Secretary of State. There would have been more engagement with the Soviet Union. Would Reagan have been happy with this arrangement? Would he have kept Ford in 1984? If Ford is still there and still in charge of foriegn policy is there arms sales to Iran? Does Ford run for President in 1988?

Gephardt was a top Democratic Congressman in the 1990s and populist Midwesterner. Bill Clinton wouldn't win, he only won because Bush had a 90% approval rating after the Gulf War and no top Democrats ran, but then the recession hit so Clinton won. Also, Obama would not be POTUS, mcnutt has this weird obsession but with a PoD in 1980 Obama's win, which came as an upset, would be butterflied away and different politicians would gain prominence.

Maybe he is less attractive to the Democrat electorate than in 2008 against Hillary Clinton? Maybe a different Democrat takes office? Maybe he doesn't win the 2004 Illinois Senate race?

That is true, we might have a person be president that we even do not know at all.

Obama is still elected in 2004. Even though he is probably not the keynote speaker that year. Presient Gore gives him the attention he needs to gather a rock star following. Gore's Vice President gets the nomination in 2008 and loses in the time of economic collapse. Becaue there is no stimulas package the economy is still in recession in 2012. Obama gets the nomination and wins in 2012.

My guess would be:
Reagan/Ford 1981-1989 Ford/Haig 1989-1993 Cuomo/Brown 1993-2001 Brown/Bradley 2001-2009 Giuliani/Thompson 2009-2017 (Thompson dies in office, 2015, and is replaced as VP by Duncan D. Hunter.) Hunter/Haley 2017-

Actually, I want to change it a bit. Assuming 911 happens as in OTL, Brown could have lost to Giuliani in 2004. So here it is fixed. And I've used everybody's full names so they're recognizable to everybody: Ronald Reagan/Gerald Ford 1981-1989 Gerald Ford/Alexander Haig 1989-1993 Mario Cuomo/Jerry Brown 1993-2001 Jerry Brown/Bill Bradley 2001-2005 Rudolph Giuliani/Fred Thompson 2005-2013 Fred Thompson/Rick Perry 2013-2015 (Thompson dies in office, Perry becomes President) Rick Perry/no VP 2013-2017 Rick Perry/Joni Ernst 2017- Read more: alternate-timelines.proboards.com/thread/1074/reagan-ford?page=1#ixzz4ZS0VwvWx
