The POD is that troops originally scheduled to lead the charge actually do. It was an inexperienced Black unit, that General Meade had little confidence in. Grant also said that if things went badly they would be accused of racism, They had been trained for the mission, so they would have led a successful charge against the fleeing Confederate troops. Reinforcements would have arrived and to exploit the gap in the Confederate lines. Petersburg falls later on july 30th.The Confederate government evacuates Richmond for Danville, Virginia. On August 1st Union forces occupy Richmond. the fall of Richmond inspires joyous celebrations throughout the North. It also helps Lincoln's political fortunes. After Lee loses the Battle of Appomatax on August 15th. the Confederate government evacuates to Raleigh. Lee flees to North Carolina with Grant in hot pursuit. On September 2nd, Sherman takes Atlanta. Eager to help Grant, Sherman gives his troops one week rest and then starts his March to the Sea on September 8. On October 15th he takes Savannah. On October 23rd he begins his invasion of South Carolina. On Octber 27th Grant enters South Carolina. With the Confederate government in Columbia South Carolina surrounded by Union forces, Northern voters are very optimistic. They reelect Lincoln with 64 % of the vote to McClellan's 36%. Lincoln carries all the Union states except Kentucky. On November 15th Lee surrenders to Grant.

For anyone who's interested a bit more can be found at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Crater. It was an attempt to break Confederate defensive lines by exploding a large mine dug under the position but as mcnutt said troops not trained for the operation lead the attack to occupy the breach. However deciding to use a different division for the attack, with a desperate lack of leadership and preparation for them meant that the advance of the unit was delayed and uncoordinated. The troops who did reach the breach found themselves stranded in the crater and suffered heavy losses.
