I agree with Steve.Early war US AA was horrible. But in time even the new kids on the block (the United States Navy) will be able to become good enough to defeat the Japanese Imperial Navy.

Definitely. Weight of numbers [in industry especially] and greater technological capacity will tell. I'm not sure that USN AA was that bad per-say. They lacked the experience of Britain and Germany in an actual shooting war but also had a couple of additional years to get things developed and sorted out. What I was basically saying was that the old US BB hadn't been upgraded in terms of AA fire that much and were designed and largely built before 1920 so were relatively weak in terms of defence against air attack. Both passively in terms of deck armour against such attacks and actively in terms of guns and fire control. Steve

Newer destroyers and cruisers had good five inch aa control and directors but not older bb's. No 20mm or 40mm at this point for closer in defense.
