Good map and some interesting changes. I notice that Norway is a slightly different colour to Sweden. Are they still united or has that union ended earlier? [Or are they basically similar but different because a common monarchy, as I notice Finland and Poland, which are ruled by the Czar are slightly different shades to that for Russia?]

The two states kept separate constitutions, laws, legislatures, administrations, state churches, armed forces, currencies and all of that. Finland and Poland are in a similar de jure situation with Russia, though the Tsar did not not respect that as much as Swedish monarchy did, especially in Poland. I keep waffling on Poland because a decently sized minority of historians feel that had Chłopicki taken Mochnacki's advice during the 1830 November uprising and attacked Lithuania there's a good chance they could have freed themselves from Russia as they had raised well over 150,000 troops and the Russian Army at this time was horribly organized, not well trained and nowhere close to modernizing to even Napoleonic standards of logistics, tactics and strategy. They probably would have been slowly partitioned yet again, unless they could get British or French support. Given that portions of what are now Belarus, Ukraine and Lithuania joined them, things could have been very different had the Poles just made better tactical choices instead of being so conservative. |

The style is reminiscent of early 20th century maps like the Cambridge Modern History Atlas from 1911. In offset printing, each colour was printed by using a separate engraving plate. More colours meant more plates which meant more expense so different line hatching patterns were use to differentiate coloured areas as well as mimic shades & tints (i.e. they eye sees a more closely spaced pattern as darker, further apart as lighter). I noticed that I had set the wrong pattern in the Ottoman Empire after exporting to PNG, I just didn't feel like taking the time to make the change. :-) |

This is the provincial flag of the Province of New Caledonia which joined Confederation on July 20th, 1871, along with the Province of Columbia. It consists of the provincia shield on a British Blue Ensign. The shield consists of St. Andrew's Cross for Caledonia, a.k.a. Scotland, the mountains which make up so much of its area, and the sun setting on the Pacific Ocean.  |
