Nope, not at all.
The history of European interventions in the Americas in the 1860s is repeated failure; the French lost more than 33,000 men in Mexico, the Spanish 18,000 in the Dominican Republic, and although the cost in lives to the Spanish of their conflict with the Chileans and Peruvians in the 1860s was certainly more than whatever gains they could have expected make ... Losing Covadonga alone made the intervention a bust.
The historical reality of the French and Spanish failures seems a reasonable point of comparison for the hypothetical conflict sketched in BROS.

Monarchists tended not to do that well in the Western Hemisphere, whether Brazilian, Mexican, Haitian, or what have you; the Enlightenment values were just too ingrained by the Nineteenth Century, I think.
Some interesting parallels in Europe in the Twentieth in terms of "The Kings Depart."

Just posted Part 1 of Chapter 7 (July, 1862); various and sundry appear, including GBM running into JE Johnston at Centreville, USG and WTS running into the Denisons (pere et fls) at Kingston, and the C-in-C in upstate New York, offering something known to history (in BROS-verse) as "The Plattsburgh Address." Hope you enjoy.

Thank you - nope, it would not be. The "Battle of the Golden Gate" is an espy mash-up of Petropavlovsk and the Taku Forts. Considering the Russians defeated the Allies in the one and the Chinese defeated the British at the other - including sinking three RN warships, largest single RN loss between Lake Champlain in 1814 and Coronel in 1914 - it's historically justifiable. All the individuals, ships, and military units are historical, as are most of the quotes in the San Francisco section. Becky Howard was "real" as well; she was fun to read about.
I included the Seneca Falls section because I wanted to introduce the reality of Foote's one hand behind its back concept with regards to the US war effort. Which included both the military recruitment pool and women in the labor force - plus I wanted to pass the Bechdel Test.
The NYT article is based on a speech Douglass gave historically in this period, as well, wig similar sentiments.
