nickdeiuliis.com/news/malta-world-war-iis-most-intriguing-what-if/It is a wonder if the Italian army decided to wait and prepare till going to war. Also, I wanted to point something at Franco Of Spain could have intervened on the axis side And launched a campaign against gilbrater. For him to undertake such a rescue move would have to mean a great axis victory enough to appear that the Germans are going to be the victors. However Since this is about Malta I will just point out that many times victory accomplished elsewhere, victories upon different areas of the fight. If the Germans had won the battle, Britain This might be possible Mathematically had the Germans began their campaign earlier. This may have happened. bigthink.com/the-present/battle-of-britain/ Thanks for the first link, but I don't think Franco would've done something, unless circumstances for him were much more favorable - and those for the WAllies much worse. And even then, he might hesitate. As written up in this wiki page for him: "as the people around him say, Franco organizes the papers on his desk in two stacks: That which is unimportant now, and that which will be unimportant if you wait long enough". That was his MO pretty much - he called it "hábil prudencia" (cunning caution, or the other way round).
Oh, and that Nick guy doesn't seem to understand that Crete was important because the Brits could've used it to bomb the oil fields of Ploiesti, Nazi Germany's major source of oil since Barbarossa. Also, he doesn't understand that the problem of Rommel was the fact that his fuel had to be transported by truck a long way from the North African harbors. Even if the Axis had had Malta, this wouldn't have changed.

I would agree that Franco is likely to seek to play safe rather than take the leap into an alliance with Hitler.
Not sure how important Crete would be in the short term as Britain wouldn't have the range and weight of attack to hit Polesti effectively from Crete while the island would need a lot of work before it could support a substantial number of heavy bombers.
However do agree there is a lot of doubt about how important Malta was in the actual problems Rommel and the Italians had in supplying forces to attack Egypt due to the long distances and lack of real infrastructure in Italian N Africa, both in terms of roads and ports.
