As I recall reading long time ago the French planned to channel the attacking Germans between Toul and Épinal and then destroy them. Had that become the basis of their plan by 1878? (if so, just how early was it the basis of the French plan? As early as 1875 or the lifting of the general post-Franco-Prussian War occupation, 1873ish?) And if this was the French 'way' for 'end' of defeating Germany by 1878, had the French built up the adequate 'means', the field forces, equipment, fixed fortifications of sufficient strength and hardness, to successfully implement their plan? |

How was that supposed to work? Airfield outside Toul 1916. Dunno as I wrote writer didn't state how - however Epinal would be on the edge of the raised terrain to the southest of Toul and Metz is on the north of Toul so "channelling" the German attack. If I look at the map You posted p.1 of 1871 that would make sense. Not all writers of military history have a sense of Military Logistics I guess..

Going back to how a major conflict breaking out in 1878 would have an effect on the Balkans: assuming that Russia and the Balkan Christian states would end up on the losing side, in addition to the loyal Albanian population being rewarded immensely for their efforts, Bosnia might actually become an Eyalet in its own right, though absorbing much more of eastern and northern Montenegro, in addition to taking bits of western Serbia as well.
Tragically though, we'd see an earlier but bloodier repression and massacres of the aforementioned Balkan Christian populations outside the presumably former vassal states of the Ottoman Empire (Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania) in the event of their defeat. Equally tragic though, in the case of the Ottomans losing in a major European War of 1878, you'd see a similar situation, but flipped.
