Eastern Theatre of War USA June 1864 III Having to make do with whats available Grant however was able to during the last days of June cross the Appomattox River and move his Fredricksburg Army on Richmond to be able to encircle General Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Not wanting to be invested within Richmond Lee decided to withdraw west with the full force of Grants on his heels. The Danish Officers of Grants Army ad advised making the Machinegun units as mobile as possible to be at the front of advance to blunt any aboutface of Lee's. Knowing the Danes to be doing the job Grant did follow the advice and was relieved when the Confederate Rear-guard turned around for an attempt at defeating the US Army Advance-guard but running into the Machineguns. Cutting down the Confederate Cavalry outside Cumberland, Virginia and then the Yelling Infantry Charge across an open field Grants Army resumed the persuit which hadn't really been impeded. Grant then had the Machingun Units and an Infantry Division cross the Appomattox to take up a blocking position at Appomattox Station to bar the road west towards Lynchburg. Some trains with supplies for ANV were at the station that was stopped and the crews locked up though the trains left in sight though with a couple of Machineguns guarding them. This blocking unit entrenched east of Appomattox Station Fieldphone cables laid out from Machinegun units back to Artillery to be on call when the ANV would arrive. The first scouting Cavalry was allowed to roam around the Union force not wanting to have Lee change direction. The scouts was very cautious but sighting the supply trains they made way ahead towards the trains and were duly cut down by the Machineguns which made the rest of the scouts turn around to flee making for these to be cut down too. A few made their way off but the Union commander expected the Rebels to show up anyway because of the sighted supply trains – anyway Lee had changed his march in Pennsylvania for Gettysburg and 6,000 pairs of shoes. Almost two hours went by before the rebels returned this time launching a strong Infantry charge on the blocking force from march with little Artillery support. The result was as expected by the Union troops; the Artillery Observers called down a barrage on the charge and the Machineguns opened up too. The charge DID move several hundred yards ahead and then stopped due to the defensive fire. There was a lull for an hour during which Artillery was brought up which however was fired upon by the Union Artillery directed by forward observers. Without most of the supporting Artillery a Cavalry charge was initiated on one flank to draw off Union fire from another Infantry charge. Both cut down and then the remaining ANV Artillery destroyed or pulled back. Then another lull where fighting could be heard to the east before stopping a couple of hours prior to nightfall. The night was quiet and come morning the blocking force was informed to move out of the position and rejoin the Army as the Rebels had surrendered. The only comments I make are: 1. The Danes have to supply extruders for modern gilded machine gun bullets, (Gilding was an 1869 Swiss invention.M.). The first bullet case extruder was actually invented in the United States around 1850. 2. Firing tables. Grid surveyed maps and surveyed in guns. Telephones. Indirect fire has not been mathematically worked out for any artillery present. (1916-1917 and even then most WWI* artillery was preplanned barrage or area fire, not instant precision call fires. You do not get call fires until it is worked out at Fort Bliss in 1936.). You "might" get grid surveyed fires by 1880 as a carryover from coast defense artillery. (1885-1890 Germans, British, French, and Americans all about the same time. We call it the Endicott System.) 3. Machine gun tactics of 1940 were not machine gun tactics of 1945+. Assuming the Danish advisors were as skilled as their German counterparts in this ISOT, offensive fires would have to be ranged on by walking bullet streams by eye (Tracers?) into beaten ground or preplanned ambush fires. Otherwise,; it is WWI ground denial graze fire based on prepared range cards. 4. While machine guns do not need good mapping, artillery does. One of the things Europeans do not understand about the American Civil War, OR THE AMERICAN ARMY, is that it mapped throughout that war as it fought, because the United States was not surveyed in. We did not have hundreds of years of surveyors and wars to grid out the countryside as the Europeans did. You cannot understand the Peninsula Campaign or the Overland Campaign or the Lincoln Administration panic about The March to the Sea, unless you realize that not even the road and rail networks were known as to layout, much less gradients, river crossings, fords or forest coverage. Without that knowledge, the ACW artillery practice was known as "bowling for Confederates" where the gunner lined a Napoleon up on a mass of infantry using iron sights like you would find on a rifle and then use his gunner's quadrant and his experience for barrel elevation for distance, and then let fly. The shell would either zing into the enemy or it would go bouncing along in random ricochets until it hit something solid and exploded. Thanks - for the comments. 1. Not to be delivered untill setting up a factory.
2. I did expect 1864 Artillery spotting to be a difficult business however we did have some Artillery Commanders in Denmark that knew how to use spotting to direct Artillery but of course the effect of 1864 Artillery is no way close to 1940. 2+3. Thats why I tried to put in some preparatory time for the Danish Artillery Officers to come closer to the situation - of which I actually know little but try my hand. 4. I did envision a MG Buzz-saw when the enemy's in range. The Danish did devote quite some time on the firing range to figure out range and adjust for it. 2+4. The Danes have had some practical training at home recently.
I was also ever so slightly asked to go more into detail on AHcom but I didn't due to these reasons.

One have to write and learn -
Eastern Theatre of War USA June 1864 IV
Post hostilities the Danish Artillery Officers had a lot of talk with their US counterparts. The Danes had been surprised that so few and if any reliable maps had been around to fully utilize indirect Artillery fire. They were fully aware that they had done whats possible and that the Machineguns had saved the day. They expressed the view that the US Army needed more modern Artillery to get value for money it just wasn't possible with available means. At Petersburg the fortifications had made excellent targets visible to the US Artillery and possible to direct. At Appomattox Station it had been fire at whats in sight and directions more of pointing where the enemy had been seen by directors. The Machinegunners had had a field day cutting down the massed Confederate formations.
General Grant did value the Danish Machineguns – the Artillery Observers not so much.

I was asked at some point who the Russian Tsarevich would marry - I have looked up suitable Princesses outside Germany:
St. Petersburg, Russia June 1864
Nixa, Tsarevich of Imperial Russia had had a long talk with his parents about his future marriage. Nixa was very sorry for the loss of Princess Dagmar as he had a collection of pictures of her and had looked forward to meet her. The changed situation of Denmarks made it imperative to consider other suitable matches.
His mother Maria had looked at the various possibilities – Princess Helena and Princess Louise of Britain, 3 and 5 years younger than Nixa, daughers of Queen Victoria. Infanta Marie Isabelle of Spain, 5 year younger than Nixa, her mother the sister of the Queen of Spain Isabella. Princess Francoise of Orléans, 1 year younger than Nixa, her father a member of the old French Royal lineage.
Tsar Alexander looked through the photographs and portraits all showing decent young women all suitable from looks to be his heirs wife and mother of his children. All of suitable linages. He had wanted to look elsewhere than to a minor German nobility state for his heirs wife and Denmark which he had family ties to through the Danish lineage and its connection to the Gottorp line had been fine. Also Denmark was geographically well placed and not too large a power. Denmark would also have provided a link to Britain as Dagmar's sister was married to the Prince of Wales. Her brother was King of the Hellenes also of Ortodox Confession. Religion wouldn't be an issue as the girl would convert to the Ortodox Confession. The Spanish Princes was of old lineage but the Orléanais might be difficult with the French Emperor ruling. One of the British would provide a link to Britain.
The Tsar, Tsarina and Nixa looked at the photographs and portraits once more.

Denmark 30 September 1940/ 26 July 1864
Stauning had been canvassing for almost six months now. He had used everything he had to convince the Danish workers and every other Dane his way being the right way. Winning a war he hadn't wanted; getting the Nation through its worst time; reestablished friendship with Sweden, Britain, USA, Austria and most of the German lands. Trade flourished and he had promised to ease the restrictions on private car fuel as soon as possible but this World could not at the moment deliver the needed oil to be refined in Denmark though still the option of converting to kerosene remained.
The West Indies had become party to Denmark once more this time its status had been changed to that of a County as was the case of Greenland and Iceland. Goods from afar was again available though of a different kind than known before and Danish firms was busy around the World laying Telegraphcables, spreading new knowledge of Health and Medicine and Veterinarian practices making the World a healthier place to be – all thanks to Denmark arriving in this backwards world.
Already the World as it had been known had changed; Prussia had been defeated by Denmark and Bismarck the great Warmonger of our World had been deposed to Brazil; a lot of the Princely States of Germany was looking to Denmark for development and prosperity; the USA had defeated the CSA and slavery in that part of the World soon be but history as was the case in the West Indies.
The Greenlanders had taken up a new way of life that of mining on a large scale and fishing from steamboats which had also become the way of fishing off Iceland and the Faeroe Islands. In Greenland Coal was being mined and other mines such of Copper had joined that of Kryolite. Coal was also mined in the Faeroe Islands. In Iceland the first Hydropower Plant was being projected not far from Reykjavik to light up the dark night. Similar plants but smaller was being built in the Faeroe Islands where fishermen benefit from their new steamboats for fishing on a larger scale than experienced previously.
Being instrumental in defeating Prussia the Danish Armed Forces had become a feared instrument in many lands; thus the Army and the Navy was about to being enlarged – not just with Soldiers and Sailors but Engineers and all sorts of specialist's. As Denmark had had its territory enlarged in the Worlds Western Hemisphere the Navy had its obligations increased – a big opportunity for fit young men eager to make life better in that part of the World but also to serve their country. A large number of young men had already taken the challenge and was serving with the Navy in the rebuilt Marines Regiment in the Far East combatting Pirates in the Nicobar Is.
Civil servants were another sector that needed an influx of bright young men and women; to guide and control the new counties to ensure the Nation would attain the highest level of good government.
Work had been undertaken to register all the riches of the Nation but more had to be done; the Institutions of Knowledge in Copenhagen and Aarhus needed be filled with young men and women eager to attain such knowledge to guide the Nation, to combat even the worst of diseases, to find new ways in Science such as paved by the Great Son of Denmarks Professor Niels Bohr who hadn't made the journey back in time along the rest of us and to teach others our knowledge so as to bring our Nation to the pinnacle of knowledge and prosperity.
Now let us all bow our heads in a moment of silence; to remember those that didn't come along us to this World and to those that fell on the Field of Battle in Slesvig to stop the Prussian evil.
Bow Your head for a minute along me.

Copenhagen 14 October 1940/ 8 August 1864
PM Stauning was sitting in his office smoking a Cigar enjoying his Scotch; he had deliberately chosen a date at the max of proscribed in Constitution for elections. Sentiments of rage, frustration, uncertainty had mainly died down. He had had time to bring the country back on track. The Liberals were still frustrated mainly due to his successfull negotiations with Britain on the Coal – Bacon/Butter/Beef issue and the USA on Crude Oil/Metals – Arms/Veterinarian Sciences issue through A.P. Møller and last but not least the status quo in the German Confederation even if there was still rumblings regarding the role of Prussia. Prussia just another large state as the other four Kingdoms; somewhat secured by separate deals in Veterinarian Sciences/Railway stock and engines. Sweden-Norway had been the easy part – the Swedish Royal family after all relatives of Christian X and with access to modern Artillery and virtually unlimited agricultural produce Denmark had gotten access to Swedish Iron ore, Norwegian Copper, Silver, Manganese and Sulphur. He knew it mattered to his constituency and anyway the Communists unable to navigate the 1864 Landscape unless joining the Anarkist's had mostly flocked to the Socialdemocratic Banner.
The Moderate Conservatives led by Christmas Møller was the most conciliatory to his politics of the Bourgeoise Parties – in his view Christmas Møller had seen the light years ago but stuck to his Conservative origins; no problem as long as he would support. The ultra-Conservatives now termed Royalists (how silly; he still supported His Majesty and would continue doing so) was in a bad state; even the Army and certainly the Navy Officers had mostly turned their backs on them. The early ”secession” by A.P. Møller had shaken them in their foundations. Clearly they would have to compete with the Slesvig (German minority) Party of the last seat of Parliament. Even if the Slesvig Party had had its best elections 3 March 1939 he really thought its days over though it just might surprise in some way; the defeat had been a tremendous blow to the aspirations of the minority. The Nazi's seemed to have imploded and the remnants joined the ultra-Conservatives at least for the elections. Overall the success of the Army and Navy so much lauded by himself and the Party had served to pull a lot – or so he liked to think – out of the clutches of the Nazi's and ultra-Conservatives. The call by both General Prior and Rear-Admiral Evers for moderation and rebuilding of both Arms as well as turning to securing the supply of items needed for running society to ensure the desired outcome of any future conflict – should such materialize – had the effect of calming the hotheads. Even though no small number thought their country able to walk on water. And had made for a large number wanting the serve the Nation with the prospect of adventure around. Anyway the final result would only be about in the morning. Nothing else to do than enjoy his Cigar and Scotch.

Elections result: Socialdemocratic Party: 71 +7 Liberal Party: 28 -2 Conservatives: 12 -14 Ultra-Conservatives: 15 (swallowed NSDAP/Nazi Party) Social Liberals: 14 Communist Party: 0 -3 Justice Party: 3 Schleswig Party: 1 Faeroe Member 1
The usual muddied Danish Elections result.
Even if Stauning had succeeded in eradicating the Communists he still looked at the figueres and sighed.
So much for winning the war and reestablish the Nation in another time. Bloody fools. Both Conservatives and Liberals of all sorts had been able to cling to their core constituency though with disastrous result for the Conservatives as the fraction of Ultra-Conservatives had appealed much to the DNSAP which had seen the cessation of its raison d'etre due to the ISOT. The Social Liberals had managed to stick to numbers – surely P. Munch's work at Frankfurt a.M. had a been a boost.

Schleswig Party disucssions April to October 1940
The elections had seen a lot of discussion within the Schleswig Party whether to do an exodus to the New Grand Duchy of South Schleswig-Holstein – Saxe-Lauenburg. Stauning had visited the discussions more than once and assured the participants of Government willingness of protecting the sales of their Danish properties so they wouldn't be robbed in the process. It had been a very emotional process. The Youth supported by the head of the ”Home Germans” - German Minority - Jens Møller who saw no future of the German Minority within a victorious Denmark argueing their importance to the new Grand Duchy as a very valuable asset both in modernizing the Agricultural sector but actually ANY sector. Still the Fathers were dubious but the Youth argued that Government protection of estate sales could only be expected in such a situation – which Stauning expressed should be expected. He found it difficult even within the Socialdemocratic Party to secure the needed majority for such to happen. Winning the war and being able to trounch any opponent as evidenced during would make it more than difficult to expect anything else.
Stauning did express that Denmark would see it in its interest to maintain a strong partner in the new Grand Duchy as South Schleswig still being a Danish Duchy and the influx of the German Minority into the new Grand Duchy would see to infuse the ways of the 1940 Denmark into 1864 community – which would be to the benefit of both parties.
As Stauning left the meeting the Minority Germans were still in doubt.

Well he's got 71 and there are 74 others with 7 different groups ranging in size from 28 to 1 seat so even if not a formal coalition it should be possible to maintain a fairly effective government. Just will have to compromise a bit but with the wide range of views in the opposition their likely to have some groups supporting just about any policy.
How close a fit are the Ultras and the former Nazis? Both are presumably hard line nationalists and militarists but the German Nazis had a distinctly socialist element in their viewpoint - albeit that may have been largely to gain popular support. I don't know the views of the Danish Nazis but it could be a somewhat uncomfortable combination.

I'll get into it next post - will post having written this. Its all about circumventing any annoying situation where he will want a 2/3 majority like in other parties asking for a referendum on some issue. He'll just make majority with 71+2 for majority but won't be able to avoid the abovementioned.
The Liberals are the old Agrarian party that sense being in trouble as Industry is about to take over the workforce. Ultraconservatives swallowed the Danish Nazi's who were ultra DANISH nationalist and not loving having the German Nazi's rule them just like any other right-wing party. They were based in small farmers sociallayer like a number of other radical Agrarian Parties during the 1930's. The Schleswig Party was German Nazi loyal so stand out from the Danish Nazi's! All three of course militarist with the Ultraconservatives in Boots and Trousers just like Nazi's V
Social Liberals is academe - Justice Party are Georgians. These are merely annoying.

Copenhagen 15 October 1940/ 9 August 1864
Stauning had invited chairmen of all parties for talks on new Government formation. Both the Social Liberals and the Conservatives would like to enter a coalition but Stauning knew he only needed 2 more mandates to attain absolute majority so tiny Justice Party would suffice though he really didn't like their political foundation. It would only be offered one Ministry but it would ask for Min of Justice and Stauning wasn't sure he would be ready for that. Besides the Party was adherents of Henry George for its political foundation certainly would offend the Liberals. Of course the Liberals had pulled out of the Unity Government on its own but Stauning would like to be able to if needed have 2/3 majority and the Liberals would assure that or BOTH Social Liberals and Conservatives which latter wasn't impossible but might prove difficult and be costly in the long (or short) run. The Liberals and Conservatives had been at loggerheads during canvassing each blaming the other for the failure of the Unity Government.
Acting Min of Foreign Affirs P. Munch had been at his throat as news of a burned out house at 16 North Eutaw Street, Baltimore in which the proprietor Maggie Branson and some of her friends among these John Wilkes Booth and Samuel Arnold perished. There was also a number of unidentified dead at the site. P. Munch had warned Stauning of tampering with History though had been rebuffed by Stauning that the arrival of Denmark's at this time in History might have had some higher purpose which none of them would know and had to work to somehow get the best of the situation.
Still P. Munch was very angry looking at Stauning asking ”what else have You set in motion we don't know of?”
Which Stauning replied ”You have been fully informed – I asked for an overview of US History in this time which we supplied our Minister at Washington, You drafted it Yourself.. however the US Minister to Copenhagen have been at Washington. We can't control the flow of information – we are not the Sovietunion.”
That had closed the mouth of P. Munch.
Life isn't necessarily easy but Political life certainly not.

Munch, head Social Liberals shut up but he won't really like them for coalition partner which if you count numbers will have Stauning court the Liberals which left the Unity Government so really isn't an option - Social Liberals more so but still annoying (and doesn't like armaments which Stauning know is a must in this World). Justice Party is just annoying due to their economic view which doesn't fit with Socialdemocratic ideas.

Referendum on Law of Time Copenhagen 16 October 1940/ 10 August 1864
Stauning opened the Parliament session following some needed recounts informing the new Parliament of the result of elections and the Referendum on time. The referendum had been a major decision to shift to using the Calender of 1864 to be in synch with the rest of the World. Before implementing the 1864 Calender the new Parliament had to agree upon the remifications of such change to Civil and Criminal Law as well as Statistic registration and the needed adjustments being made and implemented with legislation.
Stauning asked the Board of Time to work swiftly to fullfill the will of the Danish Peoples but also to work responsibly and not make undue deviations from the subject.

USA July – August 1864
President Lincoln worked hard following the defeat of the CSA to implement his promises for the Negro's of the Southern States. All had been emancipated from Slavery by the Gettysburg Address and with the Union Army in the Southern States this proclamation issued by him as Supreme Commander was now implemented. Lincoln would address Congress later in the year at its gathering confirm all Freedmen had been given right of vote. The White population of the South had rejected serving to implement this and Lincoln asked Congress to counter this by Amendmend to the Constitution. As part of the Union Army occupation of the CSA a Freedmens Bureau had been set up to allotting land in the Southern States to Blacks that had been abandoned by Plantation owners so that they as land owners would have the right to vote. Going to Congress Lincoln also drafted a Land Allotment in the Western Territories to be parcelled out to Black War Veterans thereby giving them the right to vote when Territories became States. Lincolns actions in the occupied Southern states was countered by mainly the Democratic Party but other groups of Whites were also against it – even the poor Whites of the South in many ways sharing the fate of the Negro's rejected the vote scheme. White peoples in the Northern States also rejected Black vote. Lincoln would press on politically using all his oratory ability to make America accept Negro vote.
President Lincoln referring to the Monroe Doctrine warn France of pulling out its troops of Mexico; Nap III ignore the warning and General Sherman is ordered to draw up a Corps of the Union Army on the Texas – Mexico Border. As Nap III get information of the Corps elements arriving at the border and Union Navy being quite active in the Gulf of Mexico he order the French Expedition Force in Mexico to make preparations for pulling out. The Belgian Battalions, the Egyptian Battalion and the Austrian Brigade wasn't warned by the French of the impending pulling out.
The collapse of the CSA Army the month before had certainly given Lincolns word weigh though the French Generals observed the positions of Shermans troops in South Carolina and made their dispositions accordingly i.e. the preparations moved ahead slowly and the troops used for their intent of quelching the Mexican opposition to the new Emperor.

One question. When was slavery ended in the north? Lincoln had emancipated slaves in the rebel states but there were a number in slave states that hadn't seceded, most noticeably Kentucky IIRC. I have a feeling from a discussion on another site they were only freed by legislation in 1865 while the OTL war was in its final stages. If the south has collapsed already then those laws haven't been changed yet. Assuming they still will be but tying up a loose end.
On the French withdrawal OTL Steward was fairly restrained in their removal as he realised that they were going soon any, in large part because the opposition to the policy in France. A surviving Lincoln, especially with a big military boost might be somewhat more aggressive on the issue.
