Like what happens in many movies. I suppose so. For what reason(s) aliens as advanced as the kind I brought up would bother with a non-space capable species such as ours, I can't tell you. Maybe they'd be appalled at us for not attaining world peace and would threaten to destroy us all unless we did so by whatever deadline?
That would be rather ironic, make peace else we will kill you!
Possibly more likely would be their appalled with what we're doing to the planet and give instructions for us to clear up our act immediately else they will cleanse Earth of humanity.

Even though I acknowledge that the current state of our planet is a problem, this did make me wonder if these super-advanced aliens would've ever done anything...questionable to theirs before they attained their current scientific and technological prowess. But then the discussion would drift off-topic. Another Frivolous ASB I've come up with is 'Adolf Hitler Is Born On April 20, 1989', into a world that somehow turns out more or less the same as OTL up to that point.

Is that necessarily a factor? If you make a mistake and learn from it does that prevent you seeking to prevent others making similar ones. Albeit that - change drastically now or else - is quite an intervention. Plus it could be, we won't know for sure for some time, that we have reached such a crisis point that something extreme is necessary.

Fair point, I suppose. Though maybe the aliens could dial back on the whole "destroy the whole planet" thing if they want us to care for it properly. Also, 'WI Random, Inanimate Items Could Wander Around On Their Own?' That's bound to freak everyone out

Oh, I highly doubt the teachers would fall for that textbook excuse. That said, the amount of kids reporting about how their homework disappeared throughout the world would be so many in such a short time that their homework vanishing just couldn't be a coincidence. They'd likely still be given new assignments anyway, though. So their temporary victory wouldn't last long.

Not that I know much about either vessel, but I'd guess that the latter's (comparative) contemporary-ness gives it the technological edge to win in a hypothetical battle with the CSS Shenandoah.

'1950s Authorities Interrogate A 21st Century Person'. There was actually a much more diplomatic and much less overtly grilling version of this in a Changing the Times story entitled '1954'. The protagonist was also a computer expert, and seemed to know a great deal about other topics the downtimer officials asked him about (for a civilian, anyway).

Reminds me of The Foresight War by Anthony G. Williams where 1934 downtimers interview a uptimer who comes to the UK and changes everything.
