WI (ABS?): Project Utopia
For some reason, the US / UK government decided to give inhabitants of a small town nearly a one million / billion dollars / pounds? How would it affect the local and national economy?

Well that would raise a lot of questions. Are the US joining the commonwealth - which would make the Commonwealth Games distinctly one sided. Are they accepting the monarchy? Or is it the UK becoming a republic and one or more states of the US? Assuming the latter but it would definitely require ASB intervention given all that the UK would have to give up.
Also for the early 60's at least a fair chunk of the empire is still formally under British [now American rule]. How much would independence for them be disrupted and delayed while the new government sorted things out.

It's because Wilson joked to LBJ back then that the UK should join the U.S.However, relations between London and Washington were not that good in the 1960 because the UK refused to join the U.S. in the Vietnam War.

Thanks. That reminds me of a mention about such a proposal in a story I vaguely remember reading in the early 70's probably, which might have been inspired by news of Wilson making such a comment. Agree it was a joke because of the vast cultural differences between the two nations. As well as the things I mentioned before you refer to the Vietnam war and also reminded me that the US still have conscription at this point which would be another issue.

The UK staying out of Vietnam boosted Wilson's popularity. This was considering the UK just came from succeeding in the Malayan Emergency and was still recovering from it.

No doubt on the 1st part. Not sure how much stress on British society resulted from the Malayan Emergency but there was a lot else going on as the empire was wound down with conflicts in other places such as Aden, coupled with the need to watch the Soviets in central Europe and the updating of the British deterrent force most people in the UK thought they had enough on their plate. Plus possibly being unhappy with the way the US was going about the war.

Additionally, there was a sense of "betrayal" since the U.S. basically abandoned the British during the Suez Crisis. Britain had nothing to gain by joining the U.S. war in Vietnam despite being a member of SEATO of which its goal was to halt the spread of communism in Asia.
