1920s Historical Budgets and Construction
1920: 88.4 million
1921: 80.8 million, 1 minelayer cruiser,
1922: 56.2 million, 2 battleships, 2 carrier conversions
1923: 52.6m, 1 submarine
1924: 55.6m, 5 8in cruisers, 2 destroyers (Ambuscade and Amazon)
1925: 59.7m, 4 8in cruisers, 2 submarines
1926: 57.6m, 3 8in cruisers , 6 submarines
1927: 58.1m, 1 8in cruiser, 9 destroyers, 6 submarines, 2 sloops
1928: 56.9m, 9 destroyers, 4 submarines, 4 sloops
1929: 55.8m, 1 6in cruiser, 5 destroyers, 3 submarines, 4 sloops
12 battleships @ 10 million (120 million)
2 aircraft carrier conversions @ 2.5 million (5 million)
4 new aircraft carriers @ 4.5 million (18 million)
24 8in cruisers @ 2.5 million (60 million)
40 6in cruisers @ 2 million (80 million)
144 destroyers @ 500,000 (72 million)
72 frigates @ 250,000 (18 million)
40 submarines @ 500,000 (20 million)
393 million (rounded up to 420 million with additional costs) minus the @ programme of ~ 74 million gives us 346 million. Any difference can be covered quite effectively through special funding
Larger ships will also require an infrastructure/dock construction programme, plus dredging at Suez
Dock ErrataFor the future beyond the immediate 1920s/30s programme, there will be a need for some very big slips/graving docks for building full sized supercarriers. As well as construction, there will need to be capacity for servicing those ships and other large vessels like them, ideally spread in such a fashion as to accomodate British possessions, interests and areas of operations.
- Insofar as home waters are concerned, there would need to be an RN Dockyard Very Large/Supersized Graving Docks at Rosyth and at least three other locations, including two down south (Portsmouth and Devonport being the leading locations, but also give consideration to the expansion of Chatham and Pembroke, go for the later expansion of Falmouth and Portbury/Avonmouth and consider developing something around Poole)
- Privately owned facilities on the Clydebank/Govan/Glasgow (3), Belfast (2), High Walker, Wallsend, Jarrow, Barrow-in-Furness and Birkenhead, plus the @ KGV Graving Dock at Southampton and new yards at Teesport and Hull
- In the Empire, it would be advisable for facilities in Gibraltar, Malta, the Eastern Mediterranean, Singapore (multiple VL/Supersized GDs), Halifax, Esquimalt, Sydney, Simonstown, Bombay and Trincomalee at a minimum. Additional facilities in Kingston, Freetown, Durban, Zanzibar, Aden, Waltair/Visakhapatnam, Fremantle, Adelaide and Melbourne would be 'stretch goals' or second phase objectives
- Luckily, we have a rough model to employ:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_George_V_Graving_Dock I'd increase the length a bit more to be able to full accomodate a future ~1200ft-1250ft, as one of the great advantages of future knowledge and fore-planning is being able to prevent future bottlenecks
- Cost of each will be 2.5 million for a total spend of 120 million
- Suez improvements will come out at 20 million

- Most of the demobilised spending was above historical British levels, but not hugely so. With increased budgets, any disparity will likely be small or in credit
- US construction was authorised in big bunches/years as per their Acts. If foreign construction goes under their (nonexistent
) radar, then it is less likely to provoke a legislative outrage and response
- No new destroyers were ordered until the 1930s, indicating the albatross that was the Great War programmes

- No big challenges there, if addressed during the Sleeping Decade of the 1920s, when they were able to creep up on the dormant RN and USN
- Japan can't keep up with either the British Empire or the USA if they are prepared
