Chapter 109: The Long Road Home
I'm coming home
I'm coming home
Tell the world I'm coming home
Let the rain wash away all the pain of yesterday
I know my kingdom awaits and they've forgiven my mistakes
I'm coming home, I'm coming home
Tell the world that I'm coming

Honolulu, Hawaii
After another month in Hawaii, it was finally our time to go home. The Philippine consulate announced that several rural areas among the island provinces were now safe to settle. Most of the Infected have rotted so bad that it had been easy to dodge them. They have become too slow that melee combat with bolos and spears have proven effective. Over the news, I have heard mobs of roving Filipino farmers only armed with farming tools taking on isolated groups of Infected with deadly results. It is estimated to have saved a thousand more bullets as the police and military were slowly taking on Infected in the towns.
"We're going home now." Mike said, grabbing his backpack.
I got the weird feeling of leaving this place. Four months away from home, I felt bonded to this place and the survivors I was with. It's the same kind of feeling that after spending an innumerable amount of time in a place, you'd actually miss it.
Of course, I was not in Hawaii for vacation. I was there as a refugee. Before that, Mike and I were chosen for an exchange program to Los Angeles. Unfortunately, we separated with our group as we were given three-days time-off to explore the city at the same time as the outbreak started. We never regrouped. I can only pray they made it out alive. On top of that, I bumped into Gabrielle, a girl from college I had unresolved feelings for even though I found someone else. It was unfortunate too her boyfriend was a casaulty of the outbreak. He was put down in self-defense; had he not he would have killed Gabrielle and she would have never seen her family. I did meet some people from our journey to San Diego to Hawaii. The Frenchman named Jules already returned to France to return to duty in reclaiming his homeland from the Infected. Only Spencer, Angela, and the other survivors remained in that refugee camp in Hawaii.
"Good bye my friend." Spencer said. Tamara, Nathan, Keith, Francis, and Jim stood by, saying their farewells.
"I'll miss you Gabrielle." Angela said, embracing the Filipina. She was like an older sister for her. "Thank you and stay safe."
"You too." The Filipina replied. "You guys take care now."
"Thank you Jim." I said.
The injured Texas miraculosly survived the bite. He was on prosthetics but he had a second chance in life.
We all said goodbye and farewells, and hugged each other.

"Angela, you can come with me if you want." Spencer said. "I mean that is once FEMA says it's safe to return to the mainland."
"I preferred starting a new life here in Hawaii, alone." The blonde replied. "But I guess I can't do this alone."
The girl thought of it. She was the only survivor of her family. It would be difficult for her to start a new life in Hawaii but much less if she started anew in Illinois. For much of her life, she was a West Coast girl. She was always used to the bright sunny beaches of southern California rather than the green plains of the Midwest. However, it was an offer her newfound friend gave her. She needed all the help she can. Once she turned her back on her home in Del Mar, she wanted to move on like what her father wanted before he died to the virus. Angela thought of it hard, before accepting his invite.
The Midwest wouldn't be so bad. She thought.

That was a few hours ago when we left Honolulu. Now we were on a Philippine Airlines charttered flight taking us to Guam. We would spend another two days on the island to be organized by government representatives for repatriation.
Gabrielle sat on the widow seat, watching the endless blue stretch of the Pacific. She sat beside me and Mike. Her parents were on the aise row. Her parents actually allowed her to sit beside her boyfriend. As I looked into her, she had look of worry in her face. It had been four months and she along with her parents did not know the fate of her younger sister back home.
"You okay?" I asked.
"It's about my sister. Look I just want to know what happened." She said. "If it happened, it happened." The last one was a bit of a bitter tone.
"Hey, we just got to remain positive alright?" I said.
"Oh Gill, what did I do to deserve you?" She replied, leaning unto me.
At this moment, our inflight meals were being served.
"Let's eat." I said. At the same time, I turned on the inflight movie then watched Antman and the Wasp. I needed to catch up on my Marvel Cinematic Universe. I saw Avengers: Infinity War last year May when I was still a medical student but unfortunately missed this one. I have heard the release of Avengers: Endgame would be postponed due to the outbreak. From what I read, reshoots were done on September 7, 2018 and concluded on October 12, 2018, just a mere five days before the outbreak.
Back in mind, I had thought of the list of delayed or even lost media due to this pandemic. It definitely affected the pop culture industry as well. Nothing was spared.

Another seven hours later, we landed in Guam. The island looked so beautiful from the sky. Then we were hustled to a bus then transported to a hotel where we would stay for another two days as the immigration officials grouped as by island region.
"Another island and hotel, but not on vacation." Gabrielle said. "Sad I'm gonna miss the beach again."
During our time in Hawaii, we could not even swim on the beaches as it was closed off by the authorities in case of the pressence of seaborne Infected washing ashore. The same could be said for Guam.
"Don't worry, when this is over, we can go to the beach and probably have a reunion with our old mountaineering group." I said, patting her on the back.
We were just 2,496 km away from the Philippines. The rest of us just want to go home and be safe with our families.
We're almost there. Just a little longer.
