Back in the early Sixties, the idea of a Multilateral Force was proposed. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multilateral_Force The idea was that NATO countries, the US and UK included, maybe even France before De Gaulle pulled France out of NATO's command structure, would man a joint fleet of subs with nuclear missiles. They would preform the second strike role with SLBMs. Politics killed it. How could politics instead keep it alive?
