Korean Reunification, 1993
Korea was reunified come January 1st, 1993. Across the DMZ, South Korean military forces moved northwards. They weren’t opposed. Information had been provided on where obstacles and mines were located to halt the passage of ground forces though there was a substantial airlift over the DMZ as well. Throughout their passage, there were North Korean military personnel on-hand to assist with the crossing and who guided them towards the inner confines of their country. The South Koreans entered North Korea as friends, brothers-in-arms of those in North Korean service. There was no fighting at all.
Pyongyang was soon reached. Columns of tanks along with flights of helicopters reached the city which was North Korea’s capital. Once more, there was no fighting. North Korean soldiers were generally confined to barracks under higher orders. The few which were out of their garrisons provided assistance to this movement. Wonsan, a major port on the east coast, likewise saw the arrival of a naval task force. Shipping channels where the North Koreans were able to confirm were free of mines came into use for South Korean forces as they reached there. Airlifts were made into North Korean airfields throughout the day by transport aircraft. All across North Korea, South Korean military forces arrived. There was no opposition to their takeover where they quickly brought the country under control. In the north, along the Yalu River with the Chinese frontier, South Korean soldiers arriving by air noted the presence of the People’s Liberation Army but over on their side of the river. Where North Korea and the new Russian Federation shared a border in the extreme northeast, the South Koreans were fast to reach there too. They secured the frontier crossings over which there had been the recent departure of the Group of Forces Korea. The Soviet Army, representing a country now disestablished, had gone home and with their departure, the collapse of North Korea was assured.
It had been back in 1956 when the ‘modern’ North Korea was forged. The eight year rule of Kim Il-sung had come to an end when he was deposed by the Soviet Faction of North Korean communists. His Guerrilla Faction had seemingly won out before in fights with them and the Chinese & Domestic Factions too but events in Moscow following Khrushchev’s denunciation of the deceased Stalin, saw North Korea take a different turn. Kim was out. Pak Chang-ok took power. Chinese troops inside the nation, there since the ceasefire with the United Nations brought the end to active fighting in the Korean War, assisted in the takeover. Pak might have been Moscow’s man though at the time he was aided by Beijing in a purge which eliminated Kim’s supporters.
The Chinese left North Korea two years later. It would be a decision which Beijing would later regret as the Sino-Soviet split became greater and Pak took North Korea fully into the orbit of Moscow. Pak’s death in 1963 followed a period of instability where the pressures of old factionism threatened to rise once more. China sought to gain influence in North Korea. Moscow found a new strongman though and supported his establishment of rule with the entry into North Korea of Soviet forces. The commitment was small and during their near three decade presence inside the country, the Group of Forces Korea would never ‘man the ramparts’ of the DMZ. Their primary mission was never to deter an American–South Korean threat but to instead keep the Chinese out. Chinese and Soviet border clashes during 1969 saw war fears come to North Korea. It was thought likely at that time that North Korea would be a springboard for an attack made into China. That conflict never came though.
North Korea meanwhile became a fully-fledged Soviet client state in a similar manner to those in Eastern Europe. There was some domestic political independence yet nothing real was ever done without the ultimate approval of Moscow. Pak was followed by three consecutive Korean Communist Party leaders who never stepped out of line. Relations with South Korea became cordial over time. The DMZ was a shared border between them with crossings made for trade and occasional family reunions. It was similar to that of the Iron Curtain through the middle of Divided Germany. Divided Korea was on the frontlines of the Cold War yet North Korean actions were never independent.
The Revolutions of 1989 didn’t at first trouble North Korea. Even events in Beijing had no immediate impact inside North Korea. When the Soviet Union came apart, that was when the trouble really started. In Pyongyang, the party establishment panicked. They feared a people power revolution or a Chinese invasion. The Korean People’s Army likewise shared such concerns but they didn’t trust the politicians to deal with them. Once Gorbachev brought an end to the Soviet Union in late 1991, the military in North Korea deposed the communists. They established military rule. It was never meant to be permanent though. From the outset, they never intended to hold onto power forever. The aim was reunification with South Korea. The Group of Forces Korea went home and the generals worked with Seoul. This is what they wanted: an end to North Korean independence. 1992 was a time of readiness for what came in the fast approaching New Year. The generals who took power gave it up… that doesn’t happen often elsewhere but it was seen in North Korea.
When taking over like they did, the South Koreans – the Americans provided assistance but no boots on the ground – secured North Korea from outside invasion. It was China that they feared. North Korea’s generals had deposed but not killed off the communists. Paranoia in Seoul ran that those former communists would ‘invite’ the Chinese in. That was not going to happen but South Korea took precautions in the manner in which it rapidly took control.
Korea was reunified. The financial, political and social costs of reunification weren’t cheap at all.

Repatriation
Two days after the ceasefire in the Iran War, British POWs are flown out of Iran. A Lebanese airliner in the colours of Middle Eastern Airlines picks the majority of them up from Tehran’s war-damaged international airport and sets a course for Beirut. There are one hundred and twenty-two passengers. Lebanese military doctors are aboard and the aircraft has been prepared to deal with casualties from Iranian military custody, but it is no easy task for those helpers aboard. The former captives are not in the best way. Flying over Iraq first, then through Jordan and eventually over Israel, all the while avoiding Syria where the war started, the aircraft touches down in the Lebanese capital. Lebanon, a nation which has played a significant role in mediating an end to the Iran War, is where the transfer is made to British control of their repatriated POWs.
There are two more Airbus’ waiting for the arrivals. From the Lebanese airliner, into RAF Voyager aircraft outfitted for medical cases loaded and those ten dozen plus men. These are personnel from the British Army, the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. Through various means, they all ended up as captives of Iran. Others who also became POWs lost their lives during captivity but these men survived. The RAF is determined to keep them alive. Those in need of urgent care are taken aboard first. There is a checklist run through of names – working off a Red Crescent supplied list – and military intelligence officers are on-hand. Proper debriefings will be done back in Britain but those here are present to take immediate statements from those who feel the need to talk at once. Many of them do. The first Voyager departs from Beirut an hour after the arrival of the Lebanese airliner. It heads directly for RAF Brize Norton in the Oxfordshire countryside. The second Voyager departs some time later. There is less of a hurry with this one. Those in dire straits went out on the first one. When this Voyager leaves Lebanon, it heads towards Cyprus first. At one of the British military bases on that island, a landing is made. There are further POWs who have been separately released today to pick up from there. A Swissair jet dropped off three British female captives who likewise fell into Iranian hands during the war. They left Iran with Swiss assistance alongside American women – many more – who’d been in enemy captivity and who on Cyprus are being transferred to American military aircraft. The ceasefire terms with regard to the repatriation of American and British POWs stipulated that Lebanese and Swiss civilian aircraft would take them out of Iran: not civilian or military aircraft from the nations which Tehran has only very recently stopped fighting. The British female military personnel are taken aboard the second Voyager and it heads towards Brize Norton too.
The repatriation flights land at Brize Norton in the middle of the night. There is no publicity. There are several helicopters and ambulances waiting to take the worst of the wounded away to hospitals. Others, the walking wounded, are treated on-site in a hangar pre-prepared to receive casualties. There are more former POWs without any visible sign of injuries who will need medical care though of the psychological sort. Everyone will need something, even those who say they are fine and look so too. These people have seen war and captivity too.
Certain members of those repatriated are debriefed tonight. Food and sleep is offered but there are those who want to talk who do so straight away. They have stories to tell of what happened before and during their captivity. The fighting with Iran is over yet all that has happened isn’t something being forgotten. There are those who went to war alongside them who haven’t returned home with questions sought and some answers given about their fate. More debriefing occurs in the morning. It is conducted by those who are trained to do this from various military branches and also members of the intelligence services. Eagerness is shown by several former captives to return to their home bases and families. That will be done yet everything is currently set up here for what is seen as more important. These people have come out of enemy captivity where interrogations were done and public statements denouncing the war were made. No one here is being held prisoner though they remain under military discipline.
Later during the day following their night-time landing, there is the release from Brize Norton of many of the former POWs. Initial debriefing turned up what was expected and there is no desire to keep everyone for no need. Travelling with personnel from their particular services, many of the men and two of the women return to their home bases across the country. Family reunions will happen. One of those women who went out of Iran with female American captives is in hospital. She will die today along with one of the men. Both of them were with the Royal Navy and captured in the Persian Gulf when their ship sunk. They spent their time in captivity in an Iranian military hospital but lose their lives when back in Britain. It could be argued that the flights taken contributed to their deaths: if they’d stayed in Iran, they might have lived longer. No one wants to say that openly though. Bringing these people home was what the government, the media and the public all wanted.
Their homecoming has been treated as a victory won for the nation.
In the days and weeks following repatriation, some sense of normality returns for the former POWs. It won’t come back for others. Captivity was unpleasant and being home doesn’t immediately solve everything for them. None of those who came home alive from Iran will ever truly be the same again. And… then there were those who didn’t come home too: those who died in combat and also in captivity.

Rendition
Thomas Allen is considered one of Britain’s worst traitors.
Allen committed his treason when he left his employment at the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) and ran off to Russia. He took with him many secrets from GCHQ. This organisation is one of Britain’s primary intelligence services. They work extensively with similar agencies across the world including the United States’ NSA. Allen was able to collect and smuggle out over a significant period of time information he shouldn’t have had access to. He fed that to Russian spooks active in Britain. As the noose tightened around him, as Britain’s MI-5 became aware and put a watch on him, Allen was tipped off by his handlers. His last day at work saw him steal more intelligence and then manage to get out of their facility in Gloucestershire: the well-known ‘doughnut’. That cock-up was followed by him than managing to elude the surveillance on him to get out of Britain and to Russia.
Everything with this debacle was meant to be hushed up. The British Government was aiming to keep it out of the media. Soon, Russian state media broke the story of Allen’s apparent ‘defection’. The story portrayed was one of a principled man working for a devilish organisation such as GCHQ, one in league with the equally evil NSA, who was faced with the choice of continuing to do nothing in the face of injustice or running for his own safety. Russia was where he could be safe: anywhere else he faced supposed assassins send by Britain. This story was lapped up by the usual suspects. What Russia didn’t tell the world was that he did what he did for money. When the British Government reversed its decision on making the matter public – they could hardly ignore it after the revelations and lies from Russia –, there was proof provided of just what Allen had been doing and why. He wasn’t fighting injustice but rather lining his pockets.
Since making a successful run for it, managing to escape only because Russia facilitated that, Britain has wanted him returned. International arrest warrants have been issued and ignored by Russia. Allen has himself been interviewed on state media where he has spoken of the danger to his life and claimed that only in Russia is his safety guaranteed. He’s said that he has a wish to fight to prove his innocence in court, saying that he never took a penny for what he did, but, alas, he cannot return to Britain for fear of being killed in an ‘accident’. In the most recent broadcast, Allen has spoken about his family and how he misses them.
Allen’s mother comes to Russia this summer. She is a pensioner and is making a visit to see her son. The woman is in ill health before she travels. Once in Russia, her condition gets worse. It would be best if she went back home. However, Allen and his mother take a holiday within Russia. They go down to the Black Sea coast where it is thought that the warm sea air might be able to aid her respiratory problems. Russia has provided a security team for Allen and his watchers, there to ensure his safety it is said, travel likewise down to the resort of Sochi.
British agents kidnap Allen from Sochi.
It is an operation approved at the highest level of the British Government. The dangers are many but there a go ahead is given. Allen has exposed himself to risk and a chance like this won’t come up again. He is wanted to face the justice he deserves yet there is also a (hostile) debriefing planned for him. GCHQ wants to know what he has been speaking to the Russians about and so do the Americans too. There is ‘technical assistance’ provided by them to the snatch operation too. The NSA and others aid in the nabbing of Allen though it is still a British operation.
Black-clad men who swam ashore from a ship arrive at the hotel where Allen is staying. They enter the a-joining room where his watchers/bodyguards are staying and secure them first. No killing is done but the two men are roughed up and tied up. Allen’s room is entered next. He has no idea what happens. Four men subdue him after he is awoken. They throw a hood over his head and tie his hands. He’s carried out of the hotel and down to the shore where the previous afternoon he’d been with his ill mother. Allen is in no shape to swim out to sea but there is no need. A motor launch is waiting for him and the snatch team. The latter are all former SAS and SBS commandos now in the service of MI-6. To be caught on Russia soil doing what they are doing would likely mean a bad end for them. They all had to volunteer. So too did the further professional spooks on the ground at the hotel who pinpointed where Allen was and the others who got this little watercraft where it is. Allen is thrown aboard and his captors join him. There is a ship waiting offshore and the motor launch fast approaches that to get everyone away from here.
Allen has been spirited out of Russia. His departure is certainly more dramatic than how he got out of Britain. The embarrassment which Britain suffered a year before has now been returned tenfold on Russia. The watchers will break themselves free and raise the alarm after a while. Allen’s mother will be on Russian state television talking about the disappearance of her son, fearing for his safety. She doesn’t know where he is but will in a couple of day’s time when an announcement is made in London concerning Allen’s apparent re-defection back to Britain. His rendition is something that the world will be told has been done at his own behest. Now the fallout in terms of government-to-government relations comes.

The California infestation
Amazon Water Worms arrive in California in the summer of 2025. They are first detected in the Bay Area, near San Francisco, before there is a further, separate infestation in the Imperial Valley in the area around the Salton Sea. As they have done within what was once called the Lungs of the World, the Amazon Water Worms begin to feast and multiple. The United States tries everything that Brazil has done, and a lot more too, all to no avail. The infestation takes hold through these two areas of California through the rest of the year. What has been seen with the Tragedy of the Amazon is repeated here in America.
Amazon Water Worms don’t come from outer space. They come from Earth, out of this planet, rather than from one far away. First seen in Brazil, the infestation in California isn’t the second one. Evidence comes out of the island of Borneo – shared by a trio of countries: Brunei, Indonesia & Malaysia – at the beginning of 2026 that there has been an undetected presence there for at least two years beforehand when only Brazil was thought to have an infestation. Just how Amazon Water Worms have managed to emerge in three widely geographically separate regions across the world is unknown. There is nothing to point to as to how the second and third infestations begun. They have started though. The world watches in horror.
Growing to a reported extent of up to a metre long, though generally at a length of a third of that before they die, foot-long Amazon Water Worms reproduce asexually. They need water to survive and also a supply of food. They will eat anything, living or dead too. One of them will soon become a five: it takes just over a day for that to occur with eggs hatching fast. Average lifespan is about a month. A colony will multiply across a wide area soon enough. Moving underground, they spread out seeking nourishment. To kill Amazon Water Worms, anything will do. They can be poisoned, burnt, blown up, chopped up or even stomped. This only comes about when they are located though. There is always so many of them so fast too. When they came out of the Amazon and into Brazilian cities, it has been found how fast adaptable they are to urban areas just like they were in the rainforest. They can eat anything alive inside cities too. California is different from the Amazon and Borneo without a rainforest environment but it has water, woodland and then urban areas too. Farmland was ravaged in Brazil and that it soon is too across California through the second year of their presence in America. Amazon Water Worms keep on eating with plant-life being ravaged. They also consume crops and every animal. The danger to people as seen in Brazil, and increasingly now in Borneo, is something that California witnesses.
The United States Government does all that it can. It is a war that is launched in California, across those two areas of the coastal state. The war against the Amazon Water Worms fails to stop them though from their expansion. Their infestation has taken hold and they aren’t giving up. It will be 2027 when San Francisco is finally abandoned of the remaining people who clung on: Sacramento is likewise left behind but its citizens that year too. Down in Southern California, the infestation there threatens soon Los Angeles too while providing fears that San Diego, Las Vegas and even Phoenix would see infestations within the coming years. Countless numbers of Amazon Water Worms continue to feed and multiple. The majority of them are below the ground and unseen. Those which are present on the surface gain the attention of efforts to eliminate the infestation. For everyone killed, there are millions more unseen and always on the move. Human lives are lost in California like they have been in Brazil before. They cause building collapses atop of the ecological damage from their presence in water and where they eat anything in sight. People are eaten too. Caught off-guard, usually when asleep, a bite from one Amazon Water Worms will not kill directly. The bacteria in its mouth does though with an infection that requires early, extensive treatment. One bite from one of them isn’t how things are though. Hundreds arrive quickly. As animal life has been, humans are caught by attackers which envelope them unless they can quickly get away. By then, it is usually too late though as infection arrives and those looking to eat return to their meal.
It is 2028, eight years after the first confirmed presence in Brazil, three years since their arrival in the United States, when Amazon Water Worms are being seen across most of California. They have Los Angeles at their mercy and are spreading into Arizona and Nevada too. Their onwards progress follows the course of water above and below ground: freshwater too, not the ocean. This is their preferred route of travel with going through earth being a secondary method though seeing slower spreading. Much of South America is suffering from a far bigger infestation as they spread from far out of Brazil into neighbouring countries, though most world attention is on the California infestation. That state is being depopulated. Rather than be eaten or, more likely, have buildings collapse around them, people flee. The near dry terrain of the American South-West slows them down yet by the next year, staying underground, Arizona and Nevada are on their way to following California in eventually being depopulated. Northern California has before been less infested than the Southern and Central parts of the state – even as the spread went eastwards inland – yet 2029 sees a march made up towards Oregon. Amazon Water Worms are heading to the Pacific North-West. There are now other global infestations breaking out too. China, Central Africa and then India begin to face what has been seen in California.

Britannia still rules the waves
It is the late spring of 2020. A flotilla of Royal Navy ships depart from Portsmouth and head off on a world cruise. There are goodwill visits to be made and fleet exercises with long-standing allies to take place. Past the Needles and down to the gateway to the Mediterranean the ships go. A few more join them from Gibraltar ahead of a port visit a few days later in friendly Malta. Through Suez, across the Indian Ocean and to Sri Lanka the voyage takes them. There are stops made in Aden and Colombo before war games are practised with the Indian Navy in the Sea of Bengal. India has quite the fleet, one modelled on the Royal Navy though without the considerable striking power. The exercises are friendly but they still mean something in terms of testing capabilities for each side. There’s a port visit to Penang in the Malay Federation up next. Britain’s allies here, like in India and elsewhere before, exchange traditional naval formalities with the Royal Navy. The Imperial Japanese Navy are present too. They have anchorage rights here and welcome the ships flying the White Ensign.
Down across the Strait of Malacca and to Singapore the British & Japanese ships go, all making a visit to that once British and now Malaysian shipping hub. Going up through the South China Sea, word comes from the Admiralty back in London that the planned visit to Manila in the Kingdom of the Philippines is cancelled. Before the flotilla set sail, this has been something up in the air due to ‘difficulties’ there. Peacekeepers from the Imperial Japanese Army have made the security situation secure but diplomatic issues will make it difficult for the Royal Navy to go there at this time. The flotilla thus arrives off South China early. Anchoring in the Pearl River Delta, near where Hong Kong once was before its destruction seventy-five years ago, ships of South China’s navy come out. Salutes are exchanges and there are short ceremonies. Smiles are given by all – Britons, Japanese and South Chinese alike – but there is an underlying air of tension. War is still raging in North China with the Japanese winning and Britain is Japan’s ally: the South Chinese are not happy to see this display of naval power off their coast.
Out of Chinese waters, there is a port visit made to the Republic of Formosa, a true Japanese ally and a nation with which Britain has strong ties too. In London, they sometimes call Formosa ‘East China’ but there is no undiplomatic language here like that when the Royal Navy arrives. The Formosan Navy comes out with its little ships before the Royal Navy then sails up to the Japanese Home Islands. Ships with the Imperial Japanese Navy come out to escort them in. These ones are far bigger and more potent than the ones which have sailed with the Royal Navy from Penang. A few days are spent in Tokyo Bay before the scheduled war games in the Western Pacific then start in earnest.
The Royal Navy has brought fifteen vessels on this cruise. There are a handful of support ships and smaller warships alongside the seven capital ships. Three cruisers – HMS Mars, HMS Neptune & HMS Warspite – are present alongside the aircraft carriers HMS Eagle & HMS Hermes. Then there are the arsenal ships: HMS Achilles & HMS Agamemnon. Japan has carriers and cruisers but they don’t have arsenal ships like the Royal Navy does. They’re building some and by this time next year the Imperial Japanese Navy hopes to have one in service but with three overall – HMS Ajax is in home waters – the Royal Navy leads the world’s naval powers in such a new design of warship. Achilles and Agamemnon are each full of missiles. There are hundreds aboard from small anti-aircraft & anti-missile ones to the dual-role anti-ship & land-attack large ones. These are the Thunderbolts, supersonic cruise missiles. Similar subsonic missiles are part of the weapons load-out for those trio of cruisers and the Japanese have missiles aboard their cruisers and even submarines, but these arsenal ships are something else entirely. They have no guns, no torpedoes nor aircraft: just missiles.
The war games commence across the ocean between the Marinas and Micronesia. Those are all Japanese islands which stretch far out through the Western Pacific. Mock naval battles commence between the Royal Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy with limited participation of the naval forces from other regional nations too. Aircraft, submarines and warships are all involved. This goes on for a fortnight and includes live-firing exercises too. The arsenal ships see action. Achilles fires her anti-aircraft missiles against unmanned targets. Agamemnon launches a pair of those Thunderbolts which destroy mock targets on an uninhabited Micronesian island with precision and under the watchful eyes of the Japanese. Naval observers from other countries, not taking part in these war games, see some of the action though in a controlled environment. There’s a message being sent to them concerning the strength of the alliance between London and Tokyo that has survived the testing times of the Twentieth Century and continues to as well now into the Twenty-First Century.
Once done, the Japanese go home and the Royal Navy flotilla sails on. To Sydney in Australia and then afterwards across to Panama they go. There is a stop made off Miami and another in Bermuda too before the ships will make a return to Portsmouth and also Gibraltar. Friends and rivals have been visited on the way. Ships will now undergo maintenance while the crews will be rested. Preparations begin for next year’s war games. They will take place in the North Atlantic and the Imperial Japanese Navy will be making a visit, surely bringing their own arsenal ship to them along with carriers, missile-cruisers and other ships. That is something many are looking forward to… unless you are in Washington, Paris, Berlin or Moscow.

Kidnap
The President of the United States has four children. Her two eldest sons are twins in their mid-twenties with one a teacher and the other a banker. Her youngest son is a teen currently in high school. Then there is her third oldest, a daughter named Rebecca who is twenty years-old. She’s attended a prestigious New England college for two years though is now midway through a year aboard as part of her education. This has seen Rebecca in Britain at the University of Winchester. Rebecca and her brothers have always been paid attention to by the media throughout their mother’s political career. Their father, the First Husband, has worked like his wife to try to shield them as best as possible but that has never been easy. Rebecca studying in Britain has been covered by the intrusive press. However, with cooperation from the university and also the British Government, the intrusion into her studies has been minimal. She isn’t a public figure and apart from who her mother is, there isn’t much of a story to her for anyone to run. She’s just a girl studying abroad and living a quiet life.
Yet, Rebecca’s mother is who she is and Secret Service protection is afforded to her children. This is likewise coordinated with the authorities across the pond with a British police presence not shadowing her like the Secret Service agents are but sometimes in the background. Hampshire Constabulary has received a Home Office stipend to cover the extra costs associated with providing support for the Secret Service and other expenses when it comes to security around her conducted at a discreet distance. The last thing anyone in Whitehall wants is for anything to happen to the daughter of the American president. The Prime Minister and his Cabinet know that wouldn’t play well with trans-Atlantic relations should anything happen with Rebecca. Their worst fears come true tonight though. Two of those Secret Service agents are murdered along with a housemate living with Rebecca. As to the president’s daughter, she is kidnapped from her home on the outskirts of the Hampshire town where she has made her temporary home.
The Prime Minister is woken up and told of what has happened. He’s on the phone straight away to Washington. The American President is already aware of what is going on due to other members of the Secret Service detachment assigned to Rebecca, those not murdered tonight, having direct communications links back home. Britain’s leader tells his American counterpart he will do anything and everything it takes to free Rebecca from her kidnappers. He can only speculate on the discussions being had across the pond in Washington with ‘options’ surely presented to Rebecca’s mother about the United States taking action itself. Britain will deal with this matter and get her back.
Hampshire Constabulary has contingency plans to deal with something like this: a kidnap scenario has been hypothesised beforehand in secret exercises. They have the aid of other police forces made available straight away at Home Office direction, including the much larger Metropolitan Police, and then there are too the considerable resources of other elements of the British state in the form of intelligence agencies. Finding Rebecca becomes a task that suddenly hundreds of people are working on. Mobile phone information, security camera footage and witness reports are scoured. A media blackout takes effect as police and spooks flood Winchester. The American ambassador comes to Hampshire first thing in the morning and so too does the Home Secretary. At distant places such as Thames House and Cheltenham, the homes of MI-5 and GCHQ respectively, their personnel are involved in finding out where Rebecca might be and also who might have taken her. The killing of two highly-trained Secret Service agents – everyone is almost forgetting about the other young student who has lost his life – makes it clear that this isn’t some random event. Terrorists or state actors are suspected, something that is at once certain when the cleverness of the kidnap particulars are revealed. Those who snatched Rebecca have made great efforts to cover their tracks but left a few titbits of information behind. The police don’t pick up on these, but the spooks providing assistance do and point them in the right direction.
There are some breadcrumbs to follow and trail which still has some warmth to it.
Military personnel, an SAS team from the Counter-Revolutionary Warfare Wing detachment on anti-terrorism alert, have been put on standby at Whitehall instructions but it is police officers who make the raid on a container ship docked down in Southampton in the afternoon. Those super-secret soldiers are left behind because the Home Secretary believes that the police can handle this. If she’s wrong and the First Daughter is killed… Yes, there will be hell to pay. However, a team of highly-trained armed officers make the assault against a small ship due to leave in a few hours for a distant port. They do well. They disable a trio of bad guys – the SAS would surely have shot them – and locate Rebecca. She is pulled out of a container on deck alive and well, even if rather distraught at all that’s gone on. Fifteen hours she’s been missing but her kidnap ordeal is over. The Prime Minister calls the President and there’s a helicopter flight for Rebecca to an airbase where an American military aircraft is going to be making flight to bring her home to her mother.
As to those kidnappers, they are taken away from the dockside and into police custody. There are many people who will want to talk to them. They are being held on criminal charges of kidnap and murder but their crime is far from ordinary. They start talking. There are foreign nationals, all from one particular country. They have a story to tell about who told them to do this and just what fate was awaiting Rebecca. Their stories are going to bring about a war.

Down the plug holeOne day in early 2021, seven objects fall from the heavens and subsequently crash into the Earth’s oceans. The first lands in the Arctic Ocean, off the barren Russian possession known as Bolshevik Island (post-Soviet Russia has never changed the name). The second impacts the water in the South Pacific, in another isolated stretch of the water which covers the majority of Earth, with Easter Island being the closest landmass. The South Atlantic, between Brazil and Angola, is where the third touches water but this site is far from both. The fourth strikes the Western Pacific near to Palau and not that far from the Mariana Trench, which is the deepest known portion of the world’s oceans. The fifth lands some distance to the north of the Seychelles within the Indian Ocean: the African continent is not that far away. The sixth reaches the waters of the North Atlantic between Greenland and Newfoundland in yet another lonely, out-of-the-way place. Finally, the seventh makes impact in the Southern Ocean in the Wendell Sea with the Antarctic Peninsula to the east. Each rock – it would be the best way to describe the objects as rocks considering what they are – makes their way to the bottom of the oceans and soon travel away some distance from where they land. Two of them are noticed when arriving and there is later a discovery of the impacts of two more: the three others aren’t known about. Military radars and then seismic data supporting civilian research efforts make certain world governments aware that unknown objects have fallen to Earth. Discussions are had at the highest levels while the public isn’t told. The fact that the four (the other three remained undetected) all struck the ocean instead of land and are spread across the globe in the manner which they are causes eyebrows to raise. They weren’t meteors. They slowed down. They didn’t burn up in the atmosphere. This isn’t something ‘normal’. Investigations are done in secret. Searches are made for the ones known about. Using military submarines and unmanned submersibles, there is a hunt on to find them. These efforts are ultimately fruitless despite plentiful effort expended. No trace can be found of what has arrived from the heavens. They should be where the look is made for them but they are gone from there. By the end of the year, with near global ignorance of what occurred back in January, the mean sea level of the world’s ocean drops by two millimetres. This is a reversal of trends, quite the dramatic one in the time of climate change. Maybe this is just an abnormality, an outlier? In 2022, there is another drop. This regression is of just short of thirty-one centimetres. A century of rises has been suddenly reversed in less than two years! Global weather patterns see dramatic shifts too. The world seems to be drying out. It isn’t raining as much and desertification fears spread. Nations panic and seek to secure resources while they watch the oceans slowly disappear. The next year, 2023, the drop from 2021 figures in the previous average world sea level is that of one-point-eight-nine metres. All sorts of terrible global effects come due to this. There are wars, famine and societal upheaval on Biblical scales all directly related to less water being in the oceans. Where has all of this seawater gone? If it hasn’t gone up, it must have gone down. Is it possible that water is being drained into the Earth away from the surface? Who or what is causing this is an answer that no one can give those who ask. The connection between the falling objects from heaven and the slow disappearance of the oceans is made but nothing can be done by now. 2024 sees much more of the world’s ocean disappear. That drop in mean sea levels is more than twenty meters now. The dry surface of the Earth, where the seas have retreated from the coastline in the face of this, means that there is more of the world above water than below as was the case before. With rivers and lakes gone, and little rain falling from the sky, billions upon billions of people die. Humanity falls apart at a shocking rate. The things which are done to try and save nations and people by their governments defy all reason. Nothing works to avert what is coming. Still, it is tried and this only hastens the demise of humanity. Humanity cannot measure the retreat of the oceans, the drop in average height, during 2025. The figure is close to four hundred and sixty meters. The amount of water which has disappeared is unfathomable. Where has it all gone!? Land bridges between continents are now a very real thing. The ocean floor is exposed. Few, so very few people are around to see this or explore them. They have more pressing concerns: surviving with so little water. The global population has dropped below a hundred thousand… down from eight billion in 2021. Those survivors are living on the very edge of life. A ruined planet is what now remains, one poisoned as humanity dies in the manner it does. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur by the hundredfold. The tectonic plates move with the rising of some portions of the Earth and the sinking of other parts. More objects fall from the heavens at the end of 2025. There are hundreds of them this time, clustering together in the remaining oceans. They sink too, down to the bottom and open up more holes through their efforts. Seawater disappears at an even greater rate through the beginning of 2026. Again, what is left of humanity isn’t aware. Like the oceans, the rule of humans over Earth has gone down the plug hole. The planet has new rulers now. They will reign over a waterless world with no animal life, plants nor people. This is how they want it too.
Have you posted this before as it sounds very familiar? An unpleasant fate for life on Earth.
In fact the others ring bells as well. Is this basically an update of those stories?

Target: UK
NATO and Russia have gone to war over the Baltic. Thirty-six hours in, Russia decides to up the ante and turn the limited regional conflict into something much bigger. Military attacks are made away from the Baltics and Poland. The UK is the target.
The first strike is conducted overnight with the use of air-launched cruise missiles. Flying over the Norwegian Sea, a pair of huge Russian bombers, Tupolev-95MS16 Bears, escape the attention of NATO air defences including those of Britain and launch thirty plus missiles southwards. These missiles are Kh-555 Kents. There are a couple of launch failures but the majority lance across the sky and begin to slam home into targets across Britain. RAF air defence radars spot them and a pair of Typhoon FGR4 fighters on airborne alert manage to take shots at a few but this is all the defence that Britain can muster. Fantastic explosions rock the night-time UK. Radar sites, command-&-communication posts and the RAF Lossiemouth airbase in Scotland are struck. Hundreds of casualties are caused and Britain looks almost impotent in the face of Russian air power.
The next morning, a Russian Navy submarine makes its own strike. Again, it is cruise missiles which are employed. They are fired from the Norwegian Sea with NATO anti-submarine efforts unable to locate the launching boat neither before nor after it makes the attack. There are eighteen of the 3M14K Kalibr Sizzlers which hit more military targets across the country after launch from the submarine Novosibirsk. Once more, there is a major casualty count and no defences which Britain has can touch these incoming weapons fired from a platform which gets away clean. Military barracks for the British Army and the Royal Marines around which there is much activity are blasted with explosives and subsequently engulfed in fire.
An evening missile attack for strike #3 is made by air-launched weapons again. These aren’t subsonic cruise missiles such as the Kents and the Sizzlers but instead, supersonic ballistic missiles launched from bombers this time above the Baltic Sea. A trio of heavily-loaded Tupolev-22M3M Backfires fire off Kh-47 Kinzhals. On a true ballistic arc despite the airborne firing, eleven of them slam into British targets at speeds of Mach 10. The devastation is immense. There are few military airbases in Britain after decades of defence cuts followed by defence cuts. In the East of England, RAF Coningsby and RAF Marham are struck just as the American-operated RAF Lakenheath is too. A US Army Patriot battery at Lakenheath attempts to defend the base and fails to get any of the four Kinzhals which tear apart the base in the Suffolk countryside.
The fourth and fifth strikes against the UK are made a few hours apart on the second night of the UK being targeted. Novosibirsk makes seventeen more successful shots as the Sizzler missiles from her vertical launch tubes ‘service’ three more airbases. RAF Brize Norton is the RAF’s transport hub, RAF Waddington is where support aircraft are flown from and RAF Fairford is seeing the arrival of American aircraft arriving. The casualty count is huge and the damage done is immense. That submarine will once more escape from her new firing position without return fire being directed her way. No one can find her to wipe out this submarine which now has empty missile tubes but is still laden with torpedoes and on a hunt for a surface kill.
Russian bombers are back over the Norwegian Sea once more. They come nowhere near Britain and instead launch missiles again from distance. US Navy fighters from a carrier present – a vessel which faces an attack itself later on – engage and destroy two of those bombers ahead of launch but other Bears & Backfires get their Kents and Kinzhals away. The targets this time for the dozens upon dozens of missiles are spread across Britain. PJHQ Northwood command centre north of London is flattened. GCHQ Cheltenham goes up in flames as the headquarters of Britain’s signals interception service is struck at. The Royal Navy bases at Devonport and Portsmouth on the South Coast come under attack with hits made against ships in port too. Further military communications sites across the nation for British and United States use are blown apart.
The sixth, and ultimately, final Russian attack comes the next morning, just after sunrise. Launching from above Poland, Tupolev-160M Blackjack bombers are in what should be NATO controlled skies but over a country from where ground-launched Russian missiles have spent several days smashing into. There are no enemy fighters to oppose them and their missiles fly across Western Europe and towards the UK. These are more Kents, a final barrage of sixteen of them from three bombers who all return home unharmed. Fairford and the Americans there in the West of England get another hammering and there is also the impact of cruise missiles into selected targets in the middle of London. The MOD Main building on Whitehall is hit and so too is MI-6 headquarters at Vauxhall Cross. No effective defence of the British capital is mounted.
A diplomatic solution ends the war. This comes about due to the situation on the battlefield with one side emerging the winner and the other incurring a defeat. Both victory and defeat are relative though. NATO and Russia (plus its allies in Belarus and Kazakhstan) have each spent four days engaged in a full scale war with everything short of weapons of mass destruction used. When the shooting is over, Britain is left reeling from the attacks made. Targeting the UK, Russia has caused immense military damage and also hurt the country in other ways too. Civilian casualties are very few but the nation has been walloped. Defence of the country failed miserably and everyone knows it. The government will fall and the destruction suffered physically will be matched afterwards both politically and diplomatically. An impotent Britain failed to hit back against any individual attacker and the world knows this.
