Prologue: TX Dems Path to Redemption
5:41 PM CST, January 8th, 1982
Then-TX State Attorney General Mark Wells White, Jr., (D) with his wife, Linda Gale White & his father, Mark Wells White, Sr.,
The TX Dems had suffered an embarrassing blow in 1978, watching former US SECDEF William P. Clements, Jr., (R), who had served in that post under then-President Nelson Rockefeller, roar from behind in the polls to defeat then-TX State Attorney General John Hill (D), who had suffered backlash from hardcore conservative establishment & business leaders, majority of whom had strongly supported then-TX Governor Dolph Briscoe (D), who lost to Hill in the ugly, bitter May 6th, 1978 Dem Gubernatorial Primary. In retaliation, Briscoe's family members, the family of the late TX State Attorney General Crawford Martin (D) & others got even by crossing political party lines to endorse Clements, who benefited from the split of the TX Dems. It also didn't help Hill's case that several down-ballot TX Dems distanced themselves from him & then-US President Jerry Brown, whose administration was overwhelmed by the economic collapse, the ongoing energy crisis & disastrous foreign policy decisions.
Having watched Clements becoming the Lone Star State's first GOP Governor since Reconstruction on January 16th, 1979, which ended 104 years of Dem dominance of the TX Governor's Mansion, many ambitious down-ballot TX Dems immediately began plotting to unseat Clements in the upcoming 1982 election, from the get-go, but the question is who would take on the most wealthy & powerful GOP incumbent, who pledged to spend $13 million. There was one down-ballot statewide officeholder, who wasn't afraid of Clements' mega-millions or National GOP connections, this person was going to be brave in withstanding the negative smear campaigns & attacks slandering his name & reputation. This TL will have twists & turns, enjoy
