I'm working on a universe where the Cold War continued in its mid-eighties form till the modern day. A few events would have been the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s, which would see both Soviet and NATO intervention, the Iraq War and a possible war in Afghanistan.

Mainly, ORBATs and military forces are what I'm interested in. I'm working on a BAOR 2020 ORBAT. One idea I also had featured an expansion of the US Army Reserve. ITTL, a joint USAR/ARNG formation, possibly the 5th Army, would have been activated in the mid 2000s. The reason for this would be a shift in NATO doctrine. The Alliance would go from preparing to defend West Germany until either the WARPAC is repulsed or until tactical nuclear weapons are required, to preparing to defend West Germany in greater depth and then counterattacking. This could be called the Bush Doctrine, perhaps?

Seventh Army would retain its OTL ORBAT, with minor changes. Equipment would differ in some ways as well. There would be more focus on MLRS, while helicopter units would be equipped largely with either the AH-64E or the Comanche if the program continues. USAFE would have mostly F-22s, with some F-15C squadrons still active. F-15Es would, as in OTL, replace the F-111 variants although in greater numbers. Possibly Navy fighter squadrons would get the F-14E or something similar, although this is debatable. The RAF would operate a mixture of Typhoons and F-35s, with some Tornados left in service as well.

The USAR reserve divisions/regiments are a good idea.
The 10th Cav could have been another ACR, maybe the 13th Cav.
With the 83rd Infantry Division, I understand that unit has a history, but I would think that the Americans might go for a lower-numbered division because that is what they have long done.
As to what designation, I'm not so sure though. There has been both an 11th & 12th Infantry Division in US Army history but those were active for only a small time.

BAOR: Controls British units in Germany. In wartime it takes control of all NATO forces in the Northern Army Group (NORTHAG). I British Corps is a part of BAOR: the 1st & 3rd Armoured Divisions are based in West Germany as is the majority of the 4th Armoured Division. Upon mobilisation, TA support units along with the whole 5th Infantry Division will deploy to West Germany.

UK Land Forces: Deployable formations that are based on UK soil and are not part of I Corps. This includes 1st Infantry Brigade, 6th Airmobile Division & 7th Armoured Division. 1st Infantry Brigade goes to LANDJUT in wartime; 6th Airmobile Division goes to Norway or Asia if needed there. 7th Armoured Division, a relatively new unit, can deploy to Europe as a backstop to I Corps or can fight in the Middle East with appropriate logistical support. 7th Armoured Div. is the UK’s main response force for heavy ‘Desert Storm-style’ conflicts around the world as was formed after the invasion of Iraq in 2003 took away forces from BAOR.

UK Home Command: In control of all non-deployable brigades. 2nd Infantry Division provides divisional headquarters for all of these units; all non-listed British Army battalions are part of 2nd Infantry Division, which controls the 2nd, 15th, 42nd, 49th, 52nd and 160th Infantry Brigades. In wartime there is a potential for these brigades to be formed into a deployable 2nd and/or 8th Infantry Division but their lack of any artillery or even light armor makes that very unlikely.

I felt like having a few USAR divisions worked well. The total number of USAR divisions would be way lower than that of ARNG and active-duty divisions, but they would be used to reinforce the Guard. Fifth Army HQ and the supporting elements of II, IV & VI Corps would be a mixture of Guard and USAR artillery, engineer, aviation, medical and other brigades. Interesting point about the 83rd Division: I just chose the number because I'd heard it mentioned before and it sounded better than some of the other options. 12th Infantry Division could be an option, as could the 11th, 13th or 17th, as USAR air assault or airmobile divisions.

I figured the Fifth Army would have a role of a counterattack force, beginning to arrive in Europe about a month after REFORGER commenced. This reflects a doctrinal change away from tactical nuclear weapons (though there would still be plenty of them about) and towards the idea of either holding Germany, or in a scenario where that is not viable, falling back first to the Weser, where a defensive line would be prepared to buy time for an assortment of minefields and tank traps to be laid between the Weser and the Rhine, and then falling back to the Rhine and holding the line there. After this, the Fifth Army would arrive with other NATO units - the 7th UK Armoured Division and at least one French corps, possibly a whole army - and a counteroffensive would be launched to liberate West Germany.
