In OTL, President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed California Governor and 1948 Republican Vice Presidential Nominee Earl Warren as Chief Justice. But what if instead he appointed New York Governor and 1944 and 1948 Republican Presidential Nominee Thomas Dewey as Chief Justice. How would the Supreme Court look like in such a situation? What effect would Dewey bring to the court and the United States in General? Would he push harder than Warren for Civil Rights, would he push less for it, or would he do just as much as Warren? What if he appointed the anti-labor but pro-civil rights Robert A. Taft of Ohio (with him surviving his cancer somehow)? What would happen in that case?
As a follow up question, what would be the most pro-civil rights supreme court appointed from 1949-1959? I'm curious for suggestions.
