1942 - While undergoing conversion at New York City pier 88, USS Lafayette (AP 53) catches fire resulting in the total loss of the ship.
1943 - Organized Japanese resistance on Guadalcanal ends, bringing to a close the battle that started in August 1942.
1945 - PV-1 Ventura patrol plane sinks small Japanese cargo vessel No.177 Nanshin Maru in Flores Sea west of Maumere.
1960 - USS Sargo (SSN 583) becomes the third submarine to surface through the ice at the North Pole.
1985 - Dock Landing Ship USS Whidbey Island (LSD 41) is commissioned.

1944 - USS Pogy (SS 266) attacks a Japanese convoy and sinks destroyer Minekaze and freighter Malta Maru 85 miles north-northeast of Formosa.
1945 - U.S. Navy submarine USS Batfish (SS 310) sinks three enemy submarines from Feb. 10-13.
1991 - During Operation Desert Storm, A-6 Intruders attack two unidentified patrol boats in the northern Arabian Gulf, destroying both.

1944 - USS Gudgeon (SS 211) sinks Japanese freighter Satsuma Maru that was previously damaged by Chinese B-25s off Wenchow, China.
1945 - The Yalta Conference ends after an 8-day session where President Franklin D. Roosevelt, along with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet Premier Josef Stalin, discuss Europes post-war reorganization and the reestablishment of a war-torn Europe, and for the Soviets to enter the war against Japan upon Germanys defeat.
1984 - Guided Missile Submarine USS Georgia (SSGN 729) is commissioned.
1989 - Guided Missile Cruiser USS Princeton (CG 59) is commissioned.
1989 - Fast Attack Submarine USS Pasadena (SSN 752) is commissioned.

1935 - USS Macon (ZRS 5) crashes into the sea off Point Sur, Calif., after encountering a storm that tears off her upper fin, effectively ending the Navy's trouble-plagued rigid-airship program.
1945 - USS Hawkbill (SS 366) sinks the small Japanese cargo vessel Kisaragi Maru and the two large boats she is towing, at Lombok Strait, N.E.I.
1947 - The first launch of a guided missile, the Loon, takes place on board USS Cusk (SS 348).
1994 - Coastal Patrol Ship USS Typhoon (PC 5) is commissioned.
1950 - U.S. Sixth Fleet is established. The area of responsibility encompasses 105 countries with a combined population of more than 1 billion people, and more than 20 million square nautical miles of ocean encompassing more than 67 percent of the Earth's coastline.

1913 - The Naval Radio Station, Arlington Va., begins operations. The station is a pioneer in communications, most notably with ether wave experiments with the Eiffel Tower in France.
1917 - Marine Capt. Francis T. Evans performs the first loop with a seaplane in an N-9 float plane at 3,000 feet, then forces it into a spin and successfully recovers. For this contribution to the science of aviation, he is later awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
1943 - Women Marines were reestablished as Marine Corps Womens Reserve. Col. Ruth Cheney Streeter, the first Director of the United States Marine Corps Women's Reserve, serves until Dec. 7, 1945.
1945 - USS Sennet (SS 408) is damaged by gunfire of Japanese gunboat (No.8 Kotoshiro Maru or No.3 Showa Maru), east of Tanega Shima, but then Sennett sinks No.8 Kotoshiro Maru after it had been shelled by USS Lagarto (SS 371) and USS Haddock (SS 231). Haddock then sinks No.3 Showa Maru, which had already been shelled by Lagarto and Sennett.
2018 - Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer announced the next Expeditionary Fast Transport (EPF) ship will be named USNS Newport (T-EPF 12). Spencer also announced that the next Freedom and Independence variant Littoral Combat Ships will be named USS Nantucket (LCS 27) and USS Savannah (LCS 28).

1778 - Continental ship, Ranger, commanded by John Paul Jones, receives the first official salute to a U.S. Stars and Stripes flag by a foreign government (the French fleet) at Quiberon, France.
1813 - The frigate Essex, commanded by Capt. David Porter, becomes the first U.S. Navy warship to round Cape Horn and enter the Pacific Ocean.
1814 - The frigate Constitution, commanded by Capt. Charles Stewart, captures the British Lovely Ann off Guiana, the first of four during a five-day period.
1945 - USS Gato (SS 212) sinks Japanese Coast Defense Vessel No.9 in the Yellow Sea and USS Hawkbill (SS 366) sinks Japanese auxiliary submarine chasers Cha 4 and Cha 114 in the Java Sea.
1945 - Water Tender Second Class Elmer C. Bigelow heroically fights a blaze after USS Fletcher (DD 445) is hit by enemy shelling. Bigelow dies the next day from his injuries. He is posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity. USS Bigelow (DD 942) is named in his honor in 1957.
1998 - Guided Missile Destroyer USS Mahan (DDG 72) is commissioned.

1898 - The battleship Maine explodes in Havana Harbor and nearly three-quarters of the battleship's crew die as a result of the blast. Popular opinion blames Spain, and the Spanish-American war starts soon after.
1943 - USS Gato (SS 212) sinks Japanese stores ship Suruga Maru in Bougainville Strait and USS Pickerel (SS 177) attacks a Japanese convoy and sinks cargo vessel Tateyama Maru off the east coast of Honshu.
1944 - While serving as commander of a Catalina patrol plane, Lt. Nathan Gordon responds to a report of U.S. Army Fifth Air Force personnel shot down over Kavieng Harbor in the Bismarck Sea. Risking his life and under Japanese fire, he makes a daring rescue mission, saving 15 service members from certain death or capture by the enemy. For his "extraordinary heroism, Gordon is awarded the Medal of Honor.
1960 - Icebreakers USS Burton Island (AGB-1) and USS Glacier (AGB-4) become the first US Navy vessels to reach Thurston Peninsula in the Antarctic.

a) Should this be east of the Rockies? Possibly I'm wrong but I thought most of it was places like Arizona and western Texas which are some way east of the Rockies.
b) It should be noted that the Maine explosion is generally accepted to be due to a coal-dust explosion and it was what was called the yellow press urging war with Spain that prompted the US attacking Spain.

1804 - Lt. Stephen Decatur, with volunteers from frigate Constitution and schooner Enterprise, enters Tripoli harbor in the ketch Intrepid under the stealth of darkness to burn the captured frigate Philadelphia. Decatur's raid succeeds without American losses.
1815 - The frigate Constitution captures British ship Susannah, despite the War of 1812 being over six weeks earlier. Word is slow getting to the fleet.
1944 - USS Skate (SS 305) sinks the Japanese light cruiser Agano as she deploys from Truk, Caroline Islands.
1945 - PB4Y-1 Liberators from (VPB 117) sink Japanese army cargo ship Ida Maru at Cape St. Jacques, French Indochina.
1952 - USS Gregory (DD 802), USS Twining (DD 540), and USS Rowan (DD 782) greet the first anniversary of the siege of Wonsan, Korea, with destructive interdiction fire.
1996 - Fast Attack Submarine USS Greeneville (SSN 772) is commissioned.

1864 - While at anchor off Charleston, S.C., the Steam Sloop of War USS Housatonic is attacked by the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley using a spar torpedo. USS Housatonic is recorded as the first warship to be sunk by a submarine.
1942 - The first Construction Battalion (Seabees) arrives in the Pacific during World War II at Bora Bora, Society Islands.
1944 - USS Nicholas (DD 449) sinks the Japanese submarine I-11 in the Marshall Islands.
1944 - During Operation Hailstone, aircraft from the nine aircraft carriers of Task Force 58 attack the Japanese fleet at Truk. During the 2-day strike, 33 Japanese vessels are destroyed and nine more damaged.
1945 - While wounded and gravely weakened, Medal of Honor Recipient Lt Rufus G. Herring takes the helm of the Landing Craft Infantry Gunboat (LCI(G)-449), which was heavily hit by Japanese counter-fire, rallies his men, and keeps the ship in action protecting UDT swimmers.

1900 - President William McKinley signs an Executive Order placing Tutuila (Samoa) and nearby islands under the Navy Department.
1942 - The Japanese attack Darwin, Australia in the largest attack by a foreign power on that country. USS Peary (DD 226), as well as an Army transport and freighter sink in the raid, as well as a number of Australian and British vessels.
1942 - The overnight Battle of Badoeng Strait begins when the allied naval force (ABDA) commanded by Dutch Rear Adm. W.F.M. Doorman engaged the Japanese in an attempt to stop the invasion force in Bali. USS Stewart (DE 238) is damaged.
1945 - Following pre-invasion naval gunfire and aerial bombardment, U.S. Marines land on Iwo Jima, securing the island on March 16. Fleet Adm. Chester Nimitz describes the invasion, from which 27 Medals of Honor are given, as one where uncommon valor was a common virtue.
2005 - Fast Attack Submarine USS Jimmy Carter (SSN 23) is commissioned.
