1798 - Secretary of Navy Benjamin Stoddert sends in his first annual report to Congress, requesting naval forces be increased "to make the most powerful nation desire our friendship - the most unprincipled respect our neutrality."
1812 - The frigate Constitution, commanded by William Bainbridge, captures HMS Java off Brazil, the second British frigate captured by Constitution in six months, during the War of 1812.
1942 - USS Wasmuth (DMS 15) eventually sinks, 35 miles off Scotch Cape, the southwest point of Unimak Island, Aleutians, two days after a pair of her depth charges exploded during a gale. USS Ramapo (AO 12) comes alongside in the heavy seas and heroically rescues Wasmuth’s crew.
1943 - USS Silversides (SS 236) sinks the Japanese transport Tenposan Maru, the army cargo ship Shichisei Maru, and the freighter Ryuto Maru while also damaging the army cargo ship Bichu Maru off Palau.
1944 - USS Fixity (AM 235) is commissioned. Decommissioned after the war, she is later sold for commercial service until she sinks in the Ohio River in the late 1990s. Also on this date, USS Murrelet (AM 372) is launched.

1920 - USS John D. Ford (DD 228) is commissioned. It serves in both the Atlantic and the Pacific during World War II and receives a Presidential Unit Citation, specifically honoring her "extraordinary heroism in action" during the Java Campaign, Jan. 23 - March 2, 1942 and four battle stars.
1942 - USS Greenling (SS 213) attacks a Japanese convoy 180 miles northeast of Manus, Admiralty Islands and sinks Army cargo ship Hiteru Maru and damages cargo ship Ryufuku Maru while USS Thresher (SS 200) sinks the Japanese freighter Haichan Maru west of Mata Siri Island, off the southern tip of Borneo.
1943 - USS Bluefish (SS 222) sinks Japanese oiler Ichiyu Maru in the Java Sea.
1944 - USS Block Island (CVE 106) is commissioned, serving until decommissioned in 1954. Struck from the Navy list in 1959, ex-Block Island is sold to Kowa Koeki Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Naka, of Chiyoda-Ku, Tokyo and scrapped a year later.
1944 - USS Razorback (SS 394) attacks a Japanese convoy going from Manila to Takao, about 60 miles southeast of Formosa, and sinks the destroyer Kuretake in the Bashi Channel. The Japanese cargo ships Brazil Maru and Oi Maru are also damaged during this attack.
1959 - The first fleet ballistic missile submarine, USS George Washington (SSBN 598), is commissioned.

1862 - USS Monitor founders in a storm off Cape Hatteras, N.C. and is lost. Ordinary Seaman John Jones of USS Rhode Island is awarded the Medal of Honor for his conduct while rescuing crewmen during the night.
1941 - Adm. Chester W. Nimitz assumes command of U.S. Pacific Fleet.
1942 - USS Essex (CV 9), the first of a new class of aircraft carriers, is commissioned at Norfolk, Va.
1943 - USS Greenling (SS 213) sinks Japanese transport Shoho Maru southeast of Ponape and evades counterattacks by submarine chaser Ch 30.
1948 - The last annual report by a Secretary of the Navy to Congress and the President is filed by Secretary of the Navy John L. Sullivan. Thereafter the Secretary of Defense reports annually to Congress.

1943 - USS Nautilus (SS 168) evacuated 29 civilians from Teop Island, Solomons. Also on this date, USS Porpoise (SS 172) attacked a Japanese convoy and sank the freighter Renzan Maru off northeastern coast of Honshu, Japan.
1944 - USS Ray (SS 271) sinks a Japanese gunboat at the mouth of Ambon Bay, while USS Puffer (SS 268) attacks a Japanese convoy at the western entrance of the Mindanao Sea, sinking an army cargo ship. On the same day USS Herring (SS 233) attacks a Japanese convoy, sinking an aircraft transport ship 220 miles off Tokyo Bay.
1944 - PBY aircraft sink Japanese cargo ship Kanaiyama Maru near Lorengau, Admiralities.
1947 - U.S. Pacific Command is established. USPACOM is one of six geographic Unified Combatant Commands of the United States Armed Forces. Commander, U.S. Pacific Command (CDRUSPACOM) is the oldest U.S. military authority in the Pacific Command area of responsibility.
1959 - The U.S. Naval Observatory introduces a system of uniform atomic time using cesium beam atomic oscillators. This measurement is adopted as standard by the International Committee on Weights and Measures.
1962 - Navy SEAL teams are established with Teams One and Two formed with personnel from Underwater Demolition Teams.

1944 - USS Finback (SS 230) sinks a Japanese merchant tanker in the East China Sea.
2000 - Retired Adm. Elmo R. Zumwalt, Jr., the 19th Chief of Naval Operations, dies at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.

1909 - USS Scorpion arrives to help the survivors of the Messina, Sicily earthquake. With the Great White Fleet making its way through the Suez Canal, President T. Roosevelt orders the U.S. Navy to assist.
1943 - USS Humboldt (AVP 21) rescues 10 survivors from the Philippines motor-ship Dona Aurora, which was sunk by Italian submarine Enrico Tazzol on Dec. 25, 1942.
1944 - Marine Maj. Gregory Boyington is shot down by Japanese and taken prison of war.
1945 - Task Force 38, under Vice Adm. John S. McCain, begins operations against Japanese airfields and shipping in the Formosa area, with aircraft sinking six enemy ships.
1945 - USS Kingfish (SS 234) attacks a Japanese convoy in the Bonin Islands sinking a Japanese army cargo ship and two freighters 200 miles north of Chichi Jima.

1910 - USS Michigan, the first U.S. dreadnought battleship, is commissioned.
1943 - USS Shad (SS 235) sinks German minesweeper M 4242 (ex-French trawler Odet II) in the Bay of Biscay.
1944 - USS Bluefish (SS 222) and USS Rasher (SS 269) attack a Japanese convoy off French Indochina; Bluefish sinks a merchant tanker while Rasher damages another tanker. Also on this date USS Cabrilla (SS 288) sinks a Japanese freighter off Cape Padran, French Indochina while USS Tautog (SS 109) sinks a Japanese freighter off southern Honshu.
1945 - During attacks against the U.S. Navy force bound for the Lingayen Gulf, a kamikaze crashes into escort carrier USS Ommaney Bay (CVE 79) in the Sulu Sea and damages her beyond repair. USS Burns (DD 588) scuttles the carrier escort.
1972 - Secretary of the Navy John Chaffee approved the establishment of the Legalman (LN) rating.
1989 - VF-32 F-14 Tomcats from USS John F. Kennedy shoot down two hostile Libyan MiGs with AIM-7 [Sparrow] and AIM-9 [Sidewinder] missiles in the central Med north of Tobruk in international waters.
2019 - Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer named a future Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer in honor of U.S. Senator Ted Stevens, who represented Alaska from 1968 to 2009. Sec. Spencer also named a future Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer in honor of U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran, Navy Cross recipient, and former U.S. Senator from Alabama, Admiral Jeremiah Denton.

1776 - The first Continental Navy squadron is ordered to sea by Congress to seek the British off coasts of the Carolinas and Rhode Island and in the Chesapeake Bay.
1875 - Cmdr. Edward Lull leaves New York to begin the Panamanian Expedition to locate the best ship canal route across Panama. The route mapped is followed 30 years later.
1943 - While bombing airfields and installations during the Guadalcanal campaign, USS Helena (CL 50) becomes the first U.S. Navy ship to use Mk.32 proximity-fused projectiles in combat, downing a Japanese Aichi Type 99 carrier bomber (VAL) with her second salvo.
1944 - USS Omaha (CL 4) and USS Jouett (DD 396) were summoned to engage the German blockade runner Burgenland under the guise of SS Rio Grande. Gunfire and scuttling charges, sank the German runner.
1945 - Kamikaze attacks continued against the U.S. Navy force bound for the Lingayen Gulf. Eight ships were hit and Rear Admiral Theodore E. Chandler was among those who were killed.

1813 - During the War of 1812, USS Hornet, commanded by J. Lawrence, captured the merchant schooner, Ellen, off the coast of Brazil.
1942 - Japanese capture 11 Navy nurses in Manila, Philippines. They served most of their internment at Los Baños before being liberated in February 1945.
1943 - PBY-5A (VP 83) sink German submarine U-164 off Brazil. Before being sunk, U-164 sank three Allied merchant vessels, none from the United States.
1945 - USS Walke (DD 723) is attacked by four kamikazes while laying mines. After the third plane struck the ship, burning gasoline envelopes the bridge and Cmdr. George F. Davis, the commanding officer, is horribly burned. Remaining on his feet, he conns the ship, directs damage control efforts and sees to the destruction of the fourth plane. Assured of the ship's survival, Davis is taken down below, where he dies a short time later. For his heroic conduct, Davis is posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
1996 - USS Hopper (DDG 70) is launched. The guided-missile destroyer is named for Rear Adm. Grace Hopper who, for more than four decades, was at the forefront of the computer and programming revolution.

1822 - The schooner Porpoise captures six pirate vessels off Cuba and destroys their base, while USS Spark recaptures a Dutch sloop that had been taken as a prize by pirates. A landing party destroys the pirates base in the West Indies.
1881 - Nathan Goff Jr., took office as the 28th Secretary of the Navy, serving until March. A World War II destroyer was named for him.
1945 - Destroyers Charles Ausburne (DD 570), Braine (DD 630), Russell (DD 414) and Shaw (DD 373) sink the Japanese destroyer Hinoki, 50 miles west-southwest of Manila Bay.
1945 - Submarine Spot (SS 413) sinks the Japanese gunboat No.2 Nichiei Maru in the Inland Sea.
1960 - The Navy conducts its first pad launch of an inertially-guided Polaris A1 missile at Cape Canaveral, Fla. The missile flies 900 miles.
1995 - Dock Landing Ship USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) is commissioned.

1945 - Cmdr. Charles E. Loughlin coordinates a submarine attack against a Japanese convoy off northwest coast of Formosa, sinking two freighters and a tanker and damaging three other ships.
1945 - During the continuing Japanese aerial kamikaze attacks on the Lingayen Gulf invasion force, escort carriers Kitkun Bay (CVE 71) and Kadashan Bay (CVE 76) are damaged, as well as USS Callaway (APA 35).
1963 - Destroyer Benjamin Stoddert (DDG 22) is launched. A veteran of the Vietnam War, she is decommissioned in Dec. 1991.
1983 - Fast attack submarine USS City of Corpus Christi (SSN 705) is commissioned at Naval Base Groton, Conn.
1994 - Fast attack submarine USS Santa Fe (SSN 763) is commissioned at Naval Base Groton, Conn.

1861 - The steamship Star of the West is fired on by Confederate troops from Morris Island and Fort Moultrie as she attempted to enter Charleston Harbor, S.C. These are the first pre-Confederate shots fired at a northern-based vessel.
1918 - The Naval Overseas Transportation Service, (now the Military Sealift Command), is established to carry cargo during World War I.
1942 - Submarine USS Pollack (SS 180) sinks the Japanese freighter Teian Maru (ex-Yugoslav Tomislav) 40 miles south-southwest of Inubo Saki, Japan.
1945 - Amphibious ships from Task Force 7 land the Sixth Army on Lingayen Gulf, Luzon, Philippines. The troops are lightly opposed and the amphibious stage proceeds smoothly, yet the kamikaze presence is felt after sunset.
1959 - Non-strategic submarine Halibut (SSGN 587), launches. Redesignated an attack submarine in 1965, she serves until decommissioned in 1986.
1993 - Fast Attack Submarine USS Springfield (SSN 761) is commissioned.

1917 - The first U.S. Navy production order for aerial photographic equipment is initiated when the Naval Observatory issued requisitions for 20 aero cameras and accessories to be manufactured by Eastman Kodak Company.
1934 - In the first nonstop formation flight from the United States to Hawaii, six Consolidated P2Y-1 aircraft from Patrol Squadron (VP-10) depart San Francisco, Calif. After flying 2,399 miles in 24 hours and 35 minutes. The P2Y-1 aircraft arrive at Hawaii on Jan. 11.
1943 - Submarine Trigger (SS 237) sinks the Japanese destroyer Okikaze off Yokosuka, Japan.
1944 - Submarines Seawolf (SS 197) and Steelhead (SS 280) attack a Japanese convoy about 70 miles north of Naha, Okinawa, sinking three ships, including one while in the middle of a typhoon.
1953 - The auxiliary motor minesweepers Merganser (AMS 26) and Firecrest (AMS 10) receive 40 rounds of 105 mm enemy fire from guns in the vicinity of Ponggang-ni near North Korea. Reports reflect no damage or casualties from the attack.
2009 - Aircraft carrier USS George H. W. Bush (CVN 77) is commissioned.

1820 - The schooner Lynx, commanded by Lt. J. R. Madison, departs St. Marys, Ga., bound for Kingston, Jamaica, to continue her service suppressing pirates. She is never heard from again and no trace of her or her 50-man crew is ever found.
1863 - Iron side-wheel gunboat Hatteras gets duped by Confederate cruiser Alabama, masquerading as a British warship, and is sunk off the Galveston, Texas, coast.
1900 - During the Philippine Insurrection, the gunboat Princeton, commanded by H. Knox, takes possession of the Bataan Island group in the Philippines.
1905 - The gunboat Petrel (PG 2) becomes the first U.S. Navy ship to enter Pearl Harbor, then Territory of Hawaii, by way of a newly-dredged channel.
1944 - Torpedo bombing aircraft from USS Block Island (CVE 21) make first aircraft rocket attack on German submarine, U-758.

1944 - PB4Ys bomb Japanese shipping in Kwajalein lagoon and sink the gunboat Ikuta Maru, while PBY-5s from Tarawa mine Tokowa and Torappu Channels and the south entrance to Maleolap.
1945 - Task Force 38, commanded by Vice Adm. John S. McCain, continues to bomb Japanese shipping, airfields and installations in French Indochina while also attacking three Japanese convoys, sinking approximately 30 Japanese vessels with numerous other vessels damaged.
1953 - Aircraft landings begin operational tests, day and night, onboard USS Antietam (CVA-36), the first angled flight deck carrier.
1991 - Guided Missile Cruiser USS Chosin (CG 65) is commissioned.
2019 - USS Wichita (LCS 13) joined the fleet Jan. 12, where it will play a crucial role in strengthening naval power, increasing agility and protecting national interests. USS Wichita, Freedom-variant littoral combat ship, is designed to defeat asymmetric "anti-access" threats such as mines, quiet diesel submarines and fast surface craft.
