Once a great Democratic stronghold from to the late nineteenth century to late in the twentieth one, the Southern United States—comprised of Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia—has since transformed into an arch-Republican bastion with right-wing politics that have solidified during the 2000s and into the early 2010s. But what if instead of overwhelmingly going for the GOP, the South took a somewhat different direction? That...sounds like a rather harsh take. Nonetheless, I suppose that the American South would be too socially conservative to back libertarian ideals like drug legalization and decriminalizing sex work, among others? Judging by the GOP sweeping that region of the country within the last several decades and solidifying its hold during the 2000s and into the 2010s as well, I’d assume that voting bloc would’ve still been more receptive to fiscal conservatism and whatnot. Then again, certain industries that are prominent down there—i.e. oil and gas—do depend on generous government subsidies, which the libertarian folks tend to oppose, so...
