Forgotten US Mission to Save 6,000 POWs - Task Force Fetterly 1945 - Mark Felton. Productions - 91
It might be a temporary hitch but I'm getting a message
so suspect there's a problem there.

Well that's a tragic story of people very much caught between a rock and a hard place and ultimately betrayed by both sides.

Betrayed by the Japanese at the end and captured by the Soviets and send to the Gulag is a tragic end to the last White Russians combat force i think.

Am I just too suspicious? Four separate FW-190s "Landed in error at RAF Field XXXX" just stretches credulity. I don't doubt they landed on RAF airfields but I strongly suspect those pilots did it on purpose. Could just be another way of desertion by disillusioned pilots. OR, these may be the cover story of successful Intel ops as in the pilots were bought by British Intel to deliver those aircraft.

Well you can read in the No. 1426 Flight RAF, also nicknamed how they got those 4 Focke-Wulf Fw 190s: Focke-Wulf Fw 190s number 1: became disorientated after shooting down an RAF Spitfire over Start Point, Devon. Attempting to return home, accidentally flew north instead of south and landed at RAF Pembrey on June 23rd 1942. Focke-Wulf Fw 190s number 2: Disorientated en route and running short of fuel, force-landed at RAF West Malling, April 16th 1943. Focke-Wulf Fw 190s number 3: accidentally landed at RAF Manston, Kent on May 20th 1943. Focke-Wulf Fw 190s number 4: landed in error at RAF Manston, June 20th 1943.

I just don't buy it. Britain is an island. To get back to a friendly base those pilots had to cross the English Channel. It's 21 miles wide at it's narrowest. Everyone of those aircraft had a magnetic compass and there is always the sun. No part of the UK is more than 75 miles from the sea. Point nose east and you hit the channel. Your base is on the other side.

Must admit now you mention it, it is rather suspicious that 4 such cases occurred, especially in arguably the most modern German fighter. Unless there are similar but markedly larger numbers of Me109s and the like also having such accidents.

Well here is one example of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 being forced down, i think it is Focke-Wulf Fw 190s number 1 from the list i mentioned.

Interesting and some pretty advanced a/c there. Although I love the bit where he's mentioning the Soviets having no match for the German bomber squadron just as it shows a man manually picking up a bomb and holding it alongside the a/c ready to let go when he thinks the time is right.

Thanks. Interesting and not something I was aware of before. Somewhat of an exaggeration to say they were vital as only numbering about 40,000 and if the comment at the end is right another 40,000 in the US but definitely useful for that sort of rear area support.

Have heard of the Italian Co-belligerent Army but never of this formation, thus I have learn something new.
