I suspect most of the experts were right in that by the time Manstein got close enough it was too late for a realistic breakout.  There simply wasn't enough mobile resources to support a reliable breakout.  Doubly so with the blizzard the following day as its likely many of the forces would have died without cover in such conditions.

  I don't know.  There are some suggestions that a slightly faster advance could have captured it before defenders could have arrived in strength.  Actually just watched another of his videos that relate to this - see The women who saved Stalingrad about a largely female AA unit that he suggests plugged a vital gap.

  Interesting.  Never heard of this resistance before.  Very brave men but ultimately fruitless because others had failed the country earlier.   I can understand why Chamberlain made the mistake he did but so frustrating.
