Also, I'm thinking this thread should be open to anyone who has ideas for ORBATs, events etc that they want to discuss and perhaps make into a cannon.

-103rd (TA) Regiment, Royal Artillery (Artillery unit with 105mm L118 light guns)
Notes: -2010 Strategic Defence Review sees 33rd Armoured Brigade moved from being a seperate formation to falling under 4th Mechanised Division's command. -5th (TA) Infantry Division formed as rear-security unit for I Corps but has a frontline role as static defence. -2nd (TA) Infantry Division is for security duties in UK mainland, so does not need artillery as firing 105s on English villages where Spetsnaz may be hiding is 'not the done thing'. -I Corps wartime ORBAT is 1st & 3rd Armoured Divisions & 4th Mechanised Division & 5th (TA) Infantry Division. -6th Airmobile Division formed in 1999 after NATO invasion of Yugoslavia. Paras & Ghurkas placed under 16th AAB command, 'elite' light infantry battalions under 5th Infantry Brigade command. Royal Marines placed under 6th Division command but can operate independently. -Amalgamations of historical regiments still took place circa 2004 under Labour government as cost-saving measure, however, each regiment has more battalions than before. -Every armoured & infantry brigade has its own organic artillery regiment, hence the small size of I Corps' artillery brigade; only one Howitzer regiment is under 1st Artillery Brigade's command; MLRS regiments are, however, corps assets.
Would appreciate feedback on this, it took me afternoon yesterday!

You have made many enemies at HM Treasury with this! The forces will cost a bomb. Much of the BAOR is in the UK and the rest in Germany. Their potential battlefield is in Poland. This means either a deployment ahead of any fight against the Soviets or a movement into a fight. Therefore, correctly, you have the 2019 BAOR very different from the 1989 BAOR. Should the British go into Poland, and Norway too, they'd likely be a counterattack force. This means they'll have to be prepared to fight a very different battle then one envisioned in the late OTL Cold War. I think they could do it with this force. You've balanced it well. Too much reliance on TA units for my liking but that would be the reality of the situation.

Too much reliance on TA units for my liking but that would be the reality of the situation. Oh yeah, the Treasury will be most displeased: however, compared to thr 1989 British Army, there have been a fair few cuts, with regimental amalgamations and reliance on the TA for rear-area security duties both in Poland & the UK. The 6th Division is a fairly easy one to form, and the 11th Brigade has converted to light infantry, plus the majority of forces are in the UK as opposed to Germany. As to BAOR's wartime role...The idea here is similar to REFORGER and Britain's mobilisation plans in the 1980s. My thinking here is that I Corps HQ in Berlin (probably using the old Berlin Brigade barracks as a HQ) would move over the border to Poland with the 1st AD's two forward brigades within 36 hours. The rest of the 1st AD and all of 3rd AD (one brigade of the 3rd Division is in Poland permanently) would be in Poland in a week, with the 4th Mechanised Division in ten days and the 5th TA Division after that. SHAPE would want I British Corps in Poland as a defensive force; due to the budget cuts and politics, I Corps can't be stationed in Poland permanently, and so NATO hopes for a couple of weeks warning prior to war to implement REFORGER.

I think the basic issue is that with the Soviets pushed back to 'Russian' territory they have lost a hell of a lot of both ground and population, along with production capacity and the like. Much of this has not just been lost but also is now boosting NATO's defence. As such pre-1990 and the collapse of the WP it was possible for the WP forces to overrun most of western Europe, possibly forcing France into neutrality and making it very difficult for NATO to regain that lost ground. However now how realistic is it for the rump USSR to actually wage and 'win' a largely conventional war against the bulk of N America and Europe? Can't see any great possibility they will get anywhere near the Rhine and likely probably not far into Germany or the Czech Republic if at all. That means that the bulk of European population and industrial resources will stay outside their control so NATO only has to moblise and keep on fighting and their almost certain to win. As such I can't really see the basis for a realistic Soviet military attack on NATO.

I agree. They'd be stuffed as an offensive military force that far back in Eastern Europe. forcon , what is the situation with Bulgaria? IIRC, the post-1989 government in Bulgaria was just the old guard wearing new clothes: a sort of Putinism-before-it-was-Putinism. Has the USSR got an ally in Sofia? Or are they any allies of significance elsewhere in the world?

I have some ideas in both of there areas: will answer in detail when i get back to my PC later today.
The Soviet war plan would be rapid capture of Poland, Slovakia, Hungary & Romania, plus assaults on Zealand and Norway, and then sue for peace on favourable terms. The Soviets would do this as a response to a feared NATO attack or a NATO-planned colour revolution in the USSR.
As for Bulgaria, I have not thought that through; anybody else want to write that?

Looking at the Structure of the Bulgarian People's Army 1989, it is huge, so it depends, are they pro NATO ore Pro-Soviet here.

My thinking is that they are pro-Soviet, but I wonder if anybody else has any ideas there? I always assume if there where any Pact countries who would remain pro-Soviet it would be Romania.
