Since I just read this: "Governor of New York, Edwin Morgan said thanks but no thanks to an offer to raise three 1000-man regiments of Black Soldiers from the state’s African American community." Strange. One should think that someone would have thought "Hey, nobody hates the slavery system more than the blacks, so they would make the most motivated soldiers."
True but a lot of northern whites didn't want blacks, free or otherwise competing with them economically and driving down their wages. Coupled with simple racism in many cases. As such it would cause a lot of unrest.
Large scale recruiting of blacks did occur later in the war but there were concerns about the idea of blacks having too many rights. This occurred after WWI as well as a lot of whites, not just in the south were worried over former black soldiers especially getting 'ideas above their status'.

It is only 1861, the Civil War is only 4 months old, it takes time to change a person mind as we see latter on when there are Black Regiments.

Lordroel On today's USCW post I think there's a typo here: Have a feeling that should be ceremony?
Also in the WWII thread, under the SOUTHWEST PACIFIC AREA you have
which as the quote says is in the Burma theatre and the fall of Myitkyina is mentioned higher in the post.
Other than those two typos looking good.

13 more days for the trolls to have completed advance work on the Great War, with that, 4 + years will end, will be able to focus more on the last year of the Second World War and the United States Civil War.

Noting today that only 3 months to the last entry in the WWI thread and, at least in the west, the ending of the bloodshed - albeit that the 2nd wave of the flu pandemic is continuing to kill many.

Well i am only 10 days away for pre-work on the Great War, after that, the other two projects with one going to enter its final year soon.

Otherwise looks fine. Thanks.

Noticed an oddity in the WWI post. Where your reporting shipping losses they include: There are 5 sinkings off Nova Scotia 4 by Triumph and one by U-156, 3 mentioned as being off Cape Canso. Normally when there's a concentration like this its a U boat that has caught a concentrated group of ships, often fishing boats, although those are defined as schooners. This would fit in with a U-156 mention but I wonder if Triumph is a cut and paste error?
There is also a small typo for the BOLTHONHALL sinking as assuming that should be five crew but a 'r' got added to the end. Since e & r are neighbours on the keyboard I suspect that's just a finger error.
Its taken 4 years but finally the overall commanders are realising that small bites which can be supported are a hell of a lot more practical than grasping for deep penetrating advances that can't be supported by the forces and technology of the time against a prepared enemy.
On today's WWII post a couple of points: a) The description of the Soviet attack into Romania, with a 11 1/2 hour bombardment makes it sound more like a WWI type bombardment relying simply on massed firepower rather that the more sophisticated process developed later in WWI and by most forces in WWII with intense but short bombardments concentrated on key targets.
b) On the final crushing of the Falaise pocket there seems to be a bit of odd wording?
I'm not sure what you mean by borrow? Did you mean enable or something like that?
Otherwise looking good.
Thanks
Steve

Thanks stevep , will edit it. The 20 August sinking is done by TRIUMPH, you can see for yourself here when you check the August 20th date: List of shipwrecks in August 1918

OK thanks. Do you know what Triumph was? I.e. a Surface raider of some sort? Or was that a name given to SM156 or some other U boat. That's what I found strange as the Germans don't seem to name their U boats.
No hurry as we have a more important matter coming up but just seems odd to me.

No hurry as we have a more important matter coming up but just seems odd to me. All i can so far, TRIUMP was a German naval trawler, have found the German Wikipdida site for here: triomf (schip)Using Google translate we get the following information about here: The Triumph (1907) was a Canadian trawler that was hijacked by the German submarine U 156 on 20 August 1918 and operated successfully for five days with a German prize crew as a trawler trap off the east coast of Canada. On 20 August 1918, the boat was captured as a prize by U 156 southwest of Cap Canso (Cape Breton Island) off the Canadian coast and fitted out as an auxiliary cruiser. For this, the trawler was also brought for this task with the two 8.8 cm guns he had on board and a crew of 16 men. After apparently sinking eight British and Canadian trawlers respectively, the boat was sunk by her prize crew on 25 August 1918.

OK many thanks for digging that up and clarifying. Sounds like it got haul its haul on the day it was seized. Probably using its disguise as a way of getting close to targets before attacking.
