On today's WWI post. a) I have always been amazed that Zimmermann simply admitted the telegraph was genuine. If he had fudged at all you could have see a lot of people refusing to accept any evidence that it was real and at the least left US involvement in the war distinctly more divided.
b) We're running very quickly into the February Revolution, despite already being in March. It seems surprising how quickly things came to an head and Nicholas II still doing his ostrich impersonation.
On today's WWII post, related to the attempt to form a British SS formation.
a) I did read once that several of the people who joined the Legion of St. George did so with the intent of sabotaging any such organisation. How much this was claiming after the fact I don't know but the book I was reading at the time gave some evidence in support of the suggestion. Despite the general terms offered by the Germans which no doubt encouraged some to look for an easier life as you say, its amazing how few people actually joined it.
b) The John Emery who was executed for treason was actually John Amery, the son of Leo_Amery. I don't know if its a typo in your source but I was familiar with the story and have always seen the name spelt as Amery.

Thanks. I do remember one of them and I think it was Eric Pleasants who was displayed towards the end of the video, ended up in a German camp for some reason, briefly had some liberty after the German surrender where he was with a German woman in E Germany and acting as a strongman, then got picked up by the Soviets and spent some time in the gulag. When he left that got back to Britain the response was since he had suffered under two of the most brutal regimes in recent history - and probably wasn't an idealog I suspect but can't remember - there was no point in punishing him further. Kind of stuck in the memory.

In today's WWII post there seems a small numerical error in the USAAF bomber raid.
This has 4+11 = 14 so I guess one of those numbers is at fault but wouldn't know which.
[article] JAPANESE OCCUPIED PHILIPPINES
Submarine Tambor (SS-198) lands men, ammunition, and currency at Pagadian Bay, Mindanao, P.I.
[/article] This is why the Filipinos were able to resist the Japanese occupation thanks to the efforts of U.S. submarines delivering men, arms, and supplies. Come to think of it, these are what gave birth to covert ops during the Cold War, as well as special forces. Think of the Philippines as the proto-Vietnam War for the Japanese, who were also facing insurgencies in China, Burma, Malaya, and New Guinea.

I wonder what type of currency, i assume it is the Yen that is being used in Japanese occupied Philippines ore is it the Japanese government-issued Philippine peso: General MacArthur asked the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) to replicate the Japanese currency in the Philippines for his eventual return. By luck, a supply of paper made from plants native to Japan was located in the U.S. When that supply was exhausted the counterfeiting operation was transferred to Australia. In 1943 MacArthur requested and received the following counterfeited notes; five million 10-Peso notes, three million 5-Peso notes, one and a half million 1-Peso notes and five hundred thousand 50 centavo notes.

Well if the have these block letter codes: 50 Centavo bills - PA, PB, PE, PF, PG, PH and PI 1 Peso bills - PH 5 Peso bills - PD 10 Peso bills - PA, PB, and PC
You will have U.S. counterfeited - Japanese government-issued Philippine peso.
