Let us say that Obama has bombed in the Democratic primaries in 2008. Clinton has won. McCain has long locked-up the Republican nomination too. Who does each candidate choose to be their running mate?

Mike Huckabe for Mccain. Kucinich seems a bit of a wild card. Huckabee seems possible though.

Dennis Kucinsich for Clinton.. Mike Huckabe for Mccain. Agreed for Clinton but I think McCain would've insisted on his friend Joe Lieberman. McCain really wanted him but couldn't get the GOP hierarchy to get past Lieberman's position on abortion.

Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) and Norman Coleman (R-Minnesota) both win their races, so the GOP is also able to prevent a supra-majority in the Senate for the Dems.

Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) and Norman Coleman (R-Minnesota) both win their races, so the GOP is also able to prevent a supra-majority in the Senate for the Dems. I assume that in this case, the red states represent Democratic-voting regions, and the blue state’s Republican ones? Normally, I know that it’s the other way around, with blue being associated with Democrats and red with Republicans. But my general understanding of which direction states have tended to vote in during recent years leads me to make my previous deduction.

Yes, in most other nations and in the United States until 2000, Red was used for the Democrats while Blue for the Republicans; in coverage of the 1984 elections, one NBC commentator talked about how the map was a "sea of blue for Reagan". Dave Leip's Election Atlas, which has this handy Electoral College calculator, has maintained this color scheme.

J.C. Watts for McCain, Ted Strickland for HRC. I have never heard of either of these two before. Though before the announcements in 2008, I'd barely heard of Biden and Palin was unknown.

Watts used to be a very major GOP power player in the House, while Strickland was a moderate Governor of Ohio and someone Clinton made clear she'd probably pick.
