If the KPD's Thaelmann had not stood and split the anti-conservative vote, the Weimar Coalition's Wilhelm Marx would have become Reichsprasident instead of von Hindenburg. I can't see Marx doing the things Hindenburg did in 1930-33 that helped facilitate the decline and fall of the Republic, let alone appoint Hitler as Chancellor.

Would agree that assuming he was elected Marx would have definitely opposed Hitler. Reading the wiki entry for Hindenburg during the 1925 election, see Paul_von_Hindenburg_1925_election for details he very nearly didn't run at all so that is possibly another option. Although in that case who would the right have supported and how might that candidate fare?
The uncertainty if Marx was elected would be what butterflies occur in the next 7-8 years? With a left wing president, especially if using your POD and supported by the communists how does the country, especially the right react? How does a largely left wing government react to the depression and does the right overall get stronger because the left is blamed for the problems? You might have a stronger right which isn't lead to Hitler and the Nazis, an even more deeply split country or possibly a Germany that emerges more successfully from the depression as a democracy?

That is the question, checking his Wikipedia article i cannot find any answer how he viewed the NSDAP. An additional thought on this one: Both Schliecher and von Pappen had asked Hindenburg to turn the Weimar Republic into a dictatorship before Hitler came to power. How would Wilhelm Marx react to such a request? Regards,
