I'd definitely echo the idea of Cardinal being set in the 1980s. There have been some very good period pieces from that era of late.

I'd definitely echo the idea of Cardinal being set in the 1980s. There have been some very good period pieces from that era of late. I've been reading it again in light of this conversation. The hunt in Moscow for Cardinal, especially cracking the courier chain, is excellent espionage fiction. The sensory deprivation tank is just great. This is all just begging to be on screen, including too when they catch Mary Pat Foley with Misha in that hallway. |

 I was looking for my copy of James T DeKay's history of the Frigate Macedonian, and it reminded me of Walter Jon Williams Privateers and Gentelmen naval fiction series. www.amazon.com/Privateers-Gentlemen-5-book-series/dp/B074C7D713That got me thinking of naval fiction in general, and this thread came to mind. I think any or all of his books could be good mini-series fodder. With the success of the movie Master and Commander, perhaps Pope's Nicholas Ramage books or Alexander Kent's Richard Bolitho books could fit into some age-of-sail mini-series Another thought, Warren Tute's The Cruiserwww.amazon.com/Cruiser-Warren-Tute/dp/0345295730might also make a good naval fiction mini-series. Thanks for the recommendation, Steve, I'll have to have a look. I like Ioan Gruffudd, ever since I saw him in the King Arthur movie with Kiera Knightly and Clive Owen. I have a few of the Bolitho series, I should probably gather more. I've read more of Kent's 'modern' naval fiction he publishes under his real name of Douglas Reeman. I suspect there is an English Literature Doctoral Thesis waiting to be written comparing Forester, Pope and Kent and their age-of-sail heroes.... "ON THE UPROLL!!"  Regards, |
