It's not really that uncommon to try to turn fame into political capital. A few off the top of my head:
Fred Grandy (he played 'Gopher' on the TV series "The Love Boat") was a US Representative from Iowa.
Sonny Bono (singer, actor) was a US Representative from California.
Fred Thompson (Hunt for Red October, Die Hard 2, etc) was a US Senator from Tennessee.
Al Franken (comedian, Saturday Night Live) was a Senator from Minnesota
A slightly more obscure one: Helen Gahagan Douglas was a Broadway actress (plays in the US) before becoming a US Representative from California. She lost the 1950 California Senate race to Richard Nixon.
Clint Eastwood was elected mayor of Carmel, California.
Glenn Jacobs was the WWE wrestler "Kane" was elected the mayor of Knox County, Tennessee
Another wrestler, the late Josip Peruzovic, who wrestled under the name Nikolai Volkoff, ran as a state delegate in Maryland. He was previously a code enforcement officer in Baltimore County.
Of course Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jessie Ventura were both governors of US states.
There's actually an entire Wiki page devoted to the subject:
