What if Skynet development has been sped up and went online in the summer of 1991 in the Terminator universe? It should be kept in mind that a faster Skynet needn't be the end of mankind's rule over the planet. It's been a fair bit of time since my last viewing of the movies but I don't think 1991 would be much faster then OTL. Looking at the timeline it looks to be 1997 that this happened so six years sooner. It's worth keeping in mind that it only took us out becuase it deemed us as trying to stop it, which we clearly would have done becuase it was meant to be a defensive artificial intelligence overseen by human beings. I guess with a faster Skynet we could have an better AI and thus it could talk to us and work alongside us. Otherwise we get nuked a few years sooner and as such a few less people are left becuase we had far fewer people around in 1991. Good news is that I wasn't born yet so I needn't worry if I would live or be forced to face the Terminators.

Thinking a bit more on this idea I think that we wouldn't be nuked to hell and back. A faster Skynet means better AI and a better AI means we should have a way to talk to it. In Terminator 3 we tried to stop it and it, in turn, reacted by ensuring it was safe from attack.
The way I see it this could be a neat idea that could be worth thinking about. How would Skynet aid us in the 1990s to the 2000s? How many wars may not have happened if we have had an AI that was able to solve problems before they get so bad a war starts?
I have seen this idea done before and it's an idea worth thinking about. On one hand, we could just see the nukes fly sooner. On the other we could see a world made better by having Skynet help us.
