Armee (von Manstein) continued with a ceaseless bombardment by batteries of heavy guns (up to 800mm "Big Dora") and hundreds of bombers (up to 1,000 sorties a day) of Luftflotte 7 (von Richtofen). Heavy fighting also continued on the front around beseiged Leningrad whose inhabitants were suffering from bombing, disease and starvation. 4(F)/122 was now to be found at Saki/Crimea under VIII Fliegerkorps and supported the recapture of eastern Crimea and the seige of Sevastopol while maintaining close surveillance of enemy forces in North Crimea and the Black Sea. At Kholm and Demyansk another large Russian attack was launched. The pocket, which had now shrunk to less than 1km square in size, was almost overrun as Russian forces came within 100m of the eastern bank of the Lovat River. Again German companies swung into action and halted the Russian assault. Battle of the Atlantic 6 Junkers Ju88s unsuccessfully attack Allied convoy PQ 15 (1 Ju88 shot down). 165 miles Northeast of Iceland, British battleship HMS King George V and destroyer HMS Punjabi collide in dense fog while providing distant cover to PQ 15. Map: Japanese landings on Corregidor, 5–6 May 1942NEW GUINEA CAMPAIGN - BATTLE OF THE CORAL SEA Imperial Japanese carriers commanded by Admiral Takagi enter the Coral Sea. Admiral Fletcher's US carriers are also there and are refueling. In the Coral Sea, Task Force 17, built around the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, and Task Force 11, built around the carrier USS Lexington, join south of the Louisiade Archipelago southeast of New Guinea. Aircraft of the Lexington and Yorktown Air Groups fly reconnaissance missions between Rabaul, New Britain Island, Bismarck Archipelago, and Port Morseby, New Guinea, searching for the Japanese invasion fleet bound for Port Moresby. This invasion fleet consisted of 11 troop- laden transports escorted by destroyers and covered by the light carrier Shoho, four heavy cruisers, and a destroyer. Another Japanese task force formed around the carriers Shokaku and Zuikaku, and screened by two heavy cruisers and six destroyers provided additional air cover. INDIAN OCEAN THEATRE - BATTLE OF MADAGASCAR Operation Ironclad - British invade the Vichy French island of Madagascar, East Africa, to prevent Japanese use of naval bases which would threaten the supply routes via the Cape of Good Hope to India and to Allied troops facing Rommel in Libya. Map: Organization of British ground forces for Operation Ironclad, during the invasion of Madagascar 5 May 1942At 4.30 AM, British troops (29th Independent Brigade and No. 5 Commando, specially trained for amphibious operations) land in assault craft in Courrier Bay, at the Northern tip of Madagascar. They are followed by 17th Infantry Brigade Group (5th Infantry Division) landings in nearby Ambararata Bay. They make progress inland but are held nearing the port towns of Antsirane and Diego Suarez by dogged resistance from 3000 Vichy troops, mainly Malagasy colonial troops. Fleet Air Arm bombers from British aircraft carriers HMS Indomitable and HMS Illustrious attack the airfield and anchorage at Diego Suarez, sinking Vichy submarine Bévéziers, armed merchant cruiser Bougainville and colonial sloop D'Entrecasteaux. However, subsequent waves gain a foothold allowing the landing of tanks at 9.30 AM. By 10.30 the tanks approach the Malinta tunnel, with the US headquarters and hospitals holding 1,000 wounded, and General Wainwright (Allied commander in the Philippines) broadcasts his surrender which will come into effect at noon. Before then, US troops destroy all munitions especially artillery. US river gunboats USS Luzon and USS Oahu are scuttled to prevent capture by the Japanese (USS Luzon River will be raised by the Japanese, repaired and renamed Karatsu). At midnight, General Wainwright surrenders Corregidor and the rest of the Philippines to the local Japanese commander Colonel Sato (General Homma on Bataan refuses to accept the surrender from Wainwright). NEW GUINEA CAMPAIGN - BATTLE OF THE CORAL SEA A US scout planes locates Japanese light carrier Shōhō, 4 cruisers and 1 destroyer covering the invasion force heading for Port Moresby. At 10.40 AM, 93 American aircraft from carriers USS Lexington and USS Yorktown (18 Wildcat fighters, 53 SBD dive bombers, and 22 TBD torpedo bombers) attack, hitting Japanese light carrier Shōhō with 13 1,000 lb bombs and 5 torpedoes. Photo: The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Lexington (CV-2), seen from USS Yorktown (CV-5). Large number of planes on deck and low sun indicate that the photo was taken early in the morning, prior to launching the strike against the Japanese carrier force. Yorktown has several Douglas SBD Dauntless and Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat on deck with engines running, apparently preparing to take off. Lexington, whose silhouette has been altered by the earlier removal of her 8-inch gun mounts, has planes parked fore and aft, and may be respotting her deck in preparation for launching aircraftShōhō sinks at 11.35 AM (631 killed, 203 rescued by Japanese destroyer Sazanami). As a result of being discovered and fearing attacks on the troop transports, the Japanese invasion force heading for Port Moresby turns around and heads North. A Japanese search plane mistakes US oiler USS Neosho and escort destroyer USS Sims for a carrier and a cruiser. Photo: The Japanese light carrier Shoho under attack by U.S. Navy planes on 7 May 1942. Note the Douglas TBD Devastator in lower center/left and two or three other U.S. Navy aircraft visible above the burning carrierPhoto: Shōhō hit by a torpedo launched by a Devastator from USS LexingtonAt 9.30 AM, 15 high level bombers attack but miss and at 10.38 AM USS Sims evades 9 bombs dropped by 10 bombers. A third attack by 36 Val dive bombers scores 7 direct hits on the oiler USS Neosho plus a kamikaze plane dives into her. USS Neosho is kept afloat (in part by the actions of Chief Petty Officer Oscar V. Peterson, who is horribly burned and wins the Medal of Honor posthumously). Three 500-pound bombs hit destroyer USS Sims which buckles amidships. There is a massive explosion as USS Sims sinks stern first (178 killed, 16 survivors reach USS Neosho in a damaged whaleboat). Photo: Japanese carrier dive bombers head towards the reported position of U.S. carriers on 7 MayPhoto: USS Neosho is left burning and slowly sinking at the completion of the Japanese dive bombing attackAt 5.47 PM, 12 Japanese dive bombers and 15 torpedo bombers searching for the US carriers are picked up on radar intercepted by 11 US Wildcat carrier-based fighters (9 Japanese bombers and 3 US fighters shot down). USCGC Icarus counterattacks with depth charges forcing U-352 to the surface. The crew abandons ship and scuttles U-352 (15 killed, 33 survivors). Battle of the Mediterranean Operation Bowery - in the second attempt to bolster fighter strength on besieged Malta, carrier Wasp (CV-7) launches 47 RAF Spitfires; British carrier HMS Eagle accompanies Wasp and launches 17 additional Spitfires. The success of the American carrier's second ferry mission prompts Prime Minister Churchill to observe: "Who said a Wasp couldn't sting twice?" Unlike the first ferry operation, the Spitfires are speedily serviced and readied for action, and take a heavy toll of Axis bombers on this day and the next. "Daylight raiding," Malta's war diary notes laconically, "was brought to an abrupt end. Photo: Spitfire makes ready to take off from USS WaspPacific WarNEW GUINEA CAMPAIGN - BATTLE OF THE CORAL SEA While a tactical victory for the Japanese (having sunk US carrier USS Lexington and damaged carrier USS Yorktown for the loss of light carrier Shōhō), it is also a strategic success for the US. Japanese fleet carrier Shōkaku sets sail for Japan to repair serious bomb damage and the other fleet carrier Zuikaku is also forced to return to Japan as she has too few operational aircraft to be battleworthy. United States The possibility of increasing the range of small aircraft, by operating them as towed gliders, is demonstrated at the U.S. Naval Aircraft Factory, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when two pilots hook their Grumman F4F Wildcat fighters to tow lines streaming behind a twin-engined Douglas BD (USAAF A-20), cut their engines and are towed for an hour at 180 knots at 7,000 feet. USS 'Ranger' on a transatlantic ferry trip, reached a position off the African Gold Coast and launched 60 P-40 Warhawks of the Army Air Force to Accra, from which point they were flown in a series of hops to Karachi, India, for operations with the 10th AAF. This was the first of four ferry trips made by the 'Ranger' to deliver AAF fighters across the Atlantic. Pacific WarAUSTRALIA 1,500 miles West of Australia, German armed merchant cruiser Thor stops Australian liner SS Nankin (carrying general cargo, 180 crew and 162 passengers, including 23 naval and military passengers and 38 women and children) with shellfire (2 crew killed).
