That's interesting. Counting Constantinople and Tokyo [nearly missed that ] in the 'west' the latter has all of the top 7 places. True its ~1961 and OTL the massive expansion of much of the 'Third World' population was still in relatively early stages but that still seems a rather surprising dominance. Possibly going to change with the next few decades as the greater size of countries means so many undeveloped areas have a lot of capacity to grow. Unless different cultural developments means the massive population surge in OTL is reduced considerably. However with the greater social conservatism I suspect that would be unlikely.

In 1955 historically, the largest cities were
Tokyo (13.71 million) New York-Newark (13.22 million) Osaka (8.62) London (8.28) Paris (6.8) Shanghai (5.85) Buenos Aires (5.8) Moscow (5.75) Chicago (5.56) Los Angeles-Long Beach (5.15)
The only major absence is Osaka, which is at Number 13 on Dark Earth, just after Moscow and Shanghai.

OK thanks. Didn't realise the Japanese had 2 in the top 4, let alone the top 10 then. Or Buenos Aires was that high.
