Yeah. However, they did make it, and now they essentially own space. China has conquered two celestial bodies in less than a decade, which is both terrifying and amazing. Doubt landing on the Moon and Mars is enough to own space, they need to do a lot more to do that, and also the United States will follow up, i doubt if they like being number two. Well, it just a metaphor. The US has a lot of catching up to do, and it will take a long time, perhaps decades, until they can catch up with China, at least with NASA's current budget. You may even see a NASA-SpaceX collaboration, which would indicate this is something serious. My money's on India and perhaps Japan. Those two can really offset the balance if they wanted to.

China landing on the Moon or Mars will be seen as a prestige thing by many. It'll be played up by neo-conservatives as a sign "America's losing it's lead in everything" and they'll play on people's racist fears that "The red Chi-coms are comin' to git ya'!" or something stupid like that.
Now, if the Chinese have the ability do it again, then that's when you should start worrying.

A race where China has the unquestionable lead. Will Western powers catch up? Or is this the start of a new age of Chinese supremacy?

Elon musk will get to Mars before either NASA OR China will.

Let's pretend that Elongated Musket ain't got nothing on Mars, kay?

All i'm saying is that China is essentially replicating what the Soviets did 40 years ago. Everything they do is for prestige and the old heads in the Chinese government will eventually get tired of it and pull the plug. I see no space race with China happening ever or the US losing ground to China in space.

That would trigger a lot of hotheads in America. Perhaps the government will feel enough pressure to launch their own grand Mars mission. Musk would become the most famous man in America overnight, and his capital would skyrocket. One cannot deny the practical, long-term uses of a Martian base. Imagine: research, exploration, military operations, and future voyages into deep space. It's such an obvious next step for mankind.

Are military operations allowed on Mars and the Moon, i toughed some kind UN treaty prevents the militarisation of Space.

But China can always cleverly disguise their operations as science or transportation. It's not like there's anyone else on Mars to spy on them.

So, North Korea wants to conduct a Moon mission by 2026 or before. I'm baffled and laughing so hard...
"Rocket Man" is taking his new name very seriously.
