Huh. I wonder if, as one way to mitigate the above, movie theaters could resurrect the drive-in setup so that people can watch from their cars (and thereby socially distance more effectively)? It would, of course, take money and changes to their infrastructure to get up and running (which is one drawback of transitioning into that approach, I suppose).

The date is November 2000. It is 11 months into the 21st century. The closest U.S. Presidential elections in history occurred while a recount is going to determine the winner between Bush and Gore. As a child, you would not care about this as your world consisted of cartoons and toys. Rugrats in Paris has been released in theaters. You watched it with your parents and you enjoyed it. You are enjoying the extension of the 1990s as the United States emerged as the sole superpower after the Cold War. Life is good and is getting better...
Hard to believe this movie turned 20 last November 17. Things were still innocent as this was released 10 months before 9/11.

I watched True Grit last night. It was the 2010 Coen Brothers version. Very good film. It was a bit short but that was the only failing. It is a Western and while I am not a fan of those this was highly-rated so I watched it. The story is told from the POV of a 14 year-old girl. She is brave and precocious but she is still a child. The film is believable in that regard as showing her from a strong yet vulnerable position too. I'll watch it again soon when I get the chance to appreciate it better. As a kid, I was a big fan of John Wayne's True Grit. Quite frankly, the first time I saw the Jeff bridges version I was unimpressed, probably because he was mumbling his lines. Later, I read the Charles Portis' book and then saw it again. This time my ear was tuned better and wound up enjoying the movie and have watched and enjoyed it a couple times more.
FWIW, I love a good western. Red River is my favorite with Conagher, Open Range and Lonesome dove tied for second.
The Searchers was very good also. Silverado is well worth watching. Any western with Sam Elliott will also get my interest.
What would you expect from a 20th century Neanderthal with a single malt marinated brain?

villager - but samurai fight for gold, we're farmers. We only have food.
wise man - then find hungry samurai.
I saw the Seven Samurai in Yokosuka in the late '60s. Great movie, especially given my interpreter.
One thing about the Original Magnificent Seven really impressed me was the Mexican bandit leader.
The late, great Eli Wallach's portrayal of the Mexican Bandido made him Hollywood's go to actor for such roles. Not bad for a Jew from New York.

I saw the Seven Samurai while at university and a very good film. Even better than the western remake and I still remember the reply of the wise man when the peasants ask for advice, the exchange going something like. "Hire samurai to defend your village" "But samurai only fight for gold. We have no gold, only food." "Then find hungry samurai!"
Eli Wallach was a good actor and as you say got a useful niche from that role but possibly meant he was somewhat type-cast.

"When my times comes, they'll knock on my dressing-room door and say, 'Places, please," and I'll be gone. And believe me, I'll have died a very happy man." --Eli Wallach to New York Post, December 17, 1997.
Judging by the list of Wallach's films, he was not too badly type cast Steve.
