Hitler’s angry eyes swept the room, which was packed with military officers and Nazi Party officials. He took a deep breath before he began to speak.
“Gentlemen, I sincerely hope that you recognize the danger that is coming. We don’t know when, but one thing is certain: the Entente will cross the Rhine in an effort to destroy the Aryan people, culture, and way of life. It is clear that every German citizen, every man, woman, and child, fight as hard as they can. We cannot allow the degenerate armies that the enemy fields to defeat us.
I know that we’ve had…challenges in the past year, but trust me: we can win. The German soldier is objectively superior to the Allied soldier. The corrupt, Bolshevik-loving, Jew serving Canadians may be from the future, but they lack the courage and strength that our brave soldiers exemplify on the battlefield. We have removed thousands of those who dare to betray our Aryan nation or impede our war effort. Lebensraum is proceeding well, with the Poles and Jews who dare to resist our rule being punished for doing so. The Bolsheviks have not attacked us, either.”
Hitler sighed. “Last night, I had a dream. In that dream, the Entente attack failed, and German soldiers recaptured the Rhineland, pushed into France, burned Paris to the ground, cleared the Low Countries, and forced Britain to surrender. Then, we used U-Boats to cross the Atlantic, land in the Canadian Maritime Provinces, and push all the way to Ottawa! And what we did there, I don’t know, because that is when I woke up.”
The officers looked at each other, doing their best to conceal the skepticism on their faces. The Fuhrer spoke again.
“Raeder, have the Bolsheviks collected their reward yet?”
Everyone in the room turned to look at Grand Admiral Erich Raeder, who had been disgraced with the destruction of the Kriegsmarine. Raeder cleared his throat. “Not yet, Mein Fuhrer. They are supposed to do it tomorrow.”
Hitler grunted unhappily. “What about tank and aircraft production, have we managed to replace our losses?”
Fritz Todt, the Reich Minister for Armaments and War Production, shifted uncomfortably. “No, Mein Fuhrer, we have not. The Ca…”
“WHY HAVEN’T YOU!?” screamed Hitler, standing up. “YOU HAVE HAD MONTHS TO GET A SIMPLE TASK FINISHED, YET YOU STILL MANAGED TO RUIN IT! DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND THAT THE FATE OF THE ARYAN RACE, THE LIVELIHOOD OF THE GERMAN PEOPLE IS AT STAKE??
A red-faced Hitler sat down, breathing heavily. The German leader turned to Heinrich Himmler. “What is the status of the new SS divisions?”
Himmler smirked.

While Hitler was yelling, unhappy Kriegsmarine sailors were drilling.
The 1st Kriegsmarine Division had been formed in early November, 1940. As German casualties in Operation NORDHAMMER continued to rise, the Wehrmacht desperately scraped together as many men as it could find to form new divisions. One source of manpower was the Kriegsmarine.
With the virtual annihilation of the German surface fleet, Hitler had demanded that the navy provide men for land operations. Raeder and Donitz were unhappy, but relented. Three divisions were formed. The first was in Kiel, the Second on the Weser, and the Third in Poland near Danzig.
No matter where they were, all three divisions had something in common: very low morale.

The dockworkers and sailors stared at the departing ships in near-disbelief. They had been told that what was happening made sense, and to be fair, it did. However, they were still gobsmacked, for it showed how desperate Germany really was.
The incomplete hulk of the aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin was slowly being towed out of the port by a pair of Soviet tugboats. Flanked by the destroyers Gnevny and Smetlivy, the flotilla was meant to rendezvous with the battleship Oktyabrskya Revolyutsiya and the cruiser Kirov. All of these ships were to sail to Kronstadt in the Soviet Union.
For the Kriegsmarine, it was sobering that the Soviets had a bigger navy than them.

Fully agree. Love the line "We have removed thousands of those who dare to betray our Aryan nation or impede our war effort". Aka we have killed large numbers of our own people who we blame for our failures and stupidity hence weakening ourselves further.
Suspect those Kriegsmarine divisions are going to prove very fragile when they get into combat, especially since their probably also going to have very little in the way of heavy equipment, munitions and training in their use.
Had a feeling that much of what was left of the Kriegsmarine was going to be a gift to Stalin.
That smirk on Himmler's face is bad for Germany and especially those people in the established forces.
With the map it looks like the Germans on the Rhine are already outnumbered 13 armies to 7 and I suspect, even apart from the Canadian gross superiority the allies overall probably have better levels of equipment and morale than the standard German army units. Plus armies often vary in size and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the units in the German force are below strength, especially in those who have seem combat.

That sounds ominously like the Germans could suffer more losses from deranged actions by the Nazis than by the invading allies.

In addition to the Third Reich now entering its death throes, there's also the question over whether the USSR will intervene here ITTL. I think that is the last thing the Allies want to see happening, a divided Europe like OTL with a Cold War but with a twist that one of the allies powers is from the future and which has experience the OTL Cold War and the danger that came along with it. While I'd be averse to a redone Cold War as well, I'm uncertain how the Western Allies plan to avoid it. Maybe it'd be mitigated in part by them being more adamant with the USSR about ensuring a liberal-democratic (perhaps even capitalistic!) Eastern Europe this time around? |
